Just curious why you think taking the annuity is better than the lump sum.    Based on the annuity year by year payoff on the Powerball $340 million, you wouldn't match the total of the lump sum until about the 19th year.    For an old man like me, I don't know I am going to live that long anyway and besides, screw my descendants!  ;-)

Screwing your descendants is one thing, what about the common good ?

You say you are old, so answer these Q's:

      (1)  How much do you really need ?

      (2)  How much do you really want ?

      (3)  How much do you think you can possibly piss away before you feel really stupid for having done so ?

      (4)  Do you want to leave SOMETHING to a worthy cause or just give it BACK to Uncle Sam (remember where it came from)  ?

      (5)  Who would you rather screw DEEPER:  Your descendants or Uncle Sam ?

When you choose cash, you choose to FORFEIT a TAX FREE opportunity to invest in a RISK FREE vehicle with a GUARANTEED return.

When will you people ever learn ??!!??

Trust me, I know those pesky little Constitutional Ammendments should never have been written, but life is full of little hardships. I guess, until freedom of thought is abolished, you'll just have to accept dissent. Keep up the loving attitude. Above all, keep smiling, and things will get better.

              Cheers

When will we learn? Hmm, maybe more people would be receptive to you if you weren't calling the people who choose Cash over Annuities losers. That seems so...childish.

There is no universal and clear answer to question of Annuity or Cash. The answer is that it depends and varies from person to person and every one has right to say how and what he/she feels as long as it does not offend others. But the real answer is that both the answers are correct in their own way.

                  Annuity is good for

1)The person just does not want to worry about management of money and he has various other activities which he/she thinks are better for him and does not want to spend time on the management of free money that he/she got. They just want to have fun for next 25 to 30 years either for themselves and their family.

2)The person is dumb or shall I say not so smart or below average, so he does not want to get involved in money management and he plays safest game for next 25 to 30 years of pleasure.

                  Cash is good for

1)The person is ready to take responsibility and spend some time in money management considering that he has no other work to do other than having fun and managing money so that he and his coming generations are set for a very very long time.

2)The person is smart and above average and knows how to mange money and make his fotune even bigger and bigger and knows that winning was the first push to jump start his and descendant’s safe future.

Both are right because it is individual who decides what to do and no one else can tell him what to do and what not to do, but some do take advice and some do not. And it is ok for both based on their long term goals.

People who are offended by what others do with their lottery winnings deserve to be offended because they are just nosey people sticking their nose into someone else's business.

Let's see... What else Cash is good for

TAXES, ex-wives, delinquent child support, cocaine, gambling...O my; did I say gambling ?

WELL Well well...I suppose it does NOT really matter just how good you are with your investments.  A calculated risk is still a RISK and a guaranteed return is ALWAYS GUARANTEED !!!

By the by; have you figured out a way to beat the tax HIT you will take OFF the TOP for the privlege of assuming an unnecessary risk ?  No matter how well you do with cash you are GUARANTEED two things:  You will always be in a WORSE TAX POSITION  as compared to the annuity.  Your risk profile will always be higher.

Good luck winning it.  (just DUMB luck actually)

Good skills keeping it.  (THIS you DO need)

Annuities are for Lovers...Lumps are for....the rest of YOU !!!

The fortune 500 list isn't made up of people looking for the equvalent of a high end welfare check. Nothing is really risk free in life. Taxes also will go up. If you think they will go down than an annuity might be OK but with the baby boomers retiring that would be even less likely than a MM hit. Also if you die the annuity would be hit with a death tax if it's still around for it's cash value. Unless of course you had taken cash and placed it in international accounts. Also don't play games in Europe or Canada since they are smart enought not even to have an annuity as an option. It's strictly cash only for the prize.
