The mystery of the instant millionaire started in Churchill on Friday morning when the winner of the $16 million Powerball draw took his ticket back to the local newsagent.
So publicity shy was he that he didn't even want the newsagent's owner, Tania Downie, to read out loud the amount he had won. Since then, the locals in the Gippsland town have talked about little more than the identity of the secretive winner.
At the Churchill Saloon, regulars Pommy Trev, George and Bobby say it's the town's biggest news since Jimmy stole the magistrate's lawnmower a couple of years ago.
The only person who knows the secret is Mrs Downie – and she is not telling.
"He was very quiet. He didn't want anyone to know," she said. "His wife was with him and asked how much they'd won, so I pointed and said `There's only one winner', and she just started crying."
