PHILADELPHIA - Former major league umpire Eric Gregg, known for his big personality, extra-wide strike zone and oversized frame, died Monday night, a day after he was hospitalized with a stroke. He was 55.

I was wondering what had happened to him, noticed I hadn't seen him calling any games in quite some time. Proud of him for losing the 100 pounds, not an easy feat to accomplish either.

I will miss the big guy, may you Rest In Peace........

good guy.the reason you didn't see him caling games was in '99 the umps tried to walk out for better pay and it backfired and he was let go.i think thats what happened.

Sadly, the only thing I remember about him was the "strikes" he called against the Braves back in '97 against the Fish... Livan Hernandez was pitching for the fish and Gregg moved the strike zone so far out it was almost in the on deck circle.

Fred McGriff could not have hit those called strikes with a telephone pole .

        Anyway, RIP Mr Gregg.....
