In honor of tonight's Full Moon, I have completed the latest new Lottery Post feature — a Lunar Calendar!

This is one of those things I have been working on in "secret", because I have been putting some real effort into creating a very good calendar, and I did not want to raise expectations for when it would become available.

By "very good calendar", I mean a calendar that is about as accurate as possible.

Anyone who studies the movements and phases of the moon knows that the lunar cycle does not match perfectly with the Gregorian calendar (the one we all use), so the moon cycle "shifts" about (but not exactly) a day every month.  Because the shift occurs slowly, you reach one or two days a month where it can be confusing as to whether the lunar cycle is on one phase or the next.

How those "trouble days" are handled is what spearates the good from the average, and I believe the Lottery Post Lunar Calendar is "good".

The page also includes a nice "Moon Right Now" view that gets updated frequently during the day.  It is extremely accurate.

I hope you all enjoy this new feature!  I'll be linking it into the Lottery Post menu soon after I post this.

fantastic new feature..thanks Todd. However I'm a little curious how you came up with your phase calculations. For instance most sites have January 3 as the full moon (spaceweather.com as well as the US Naval observation site) whereas you have it as January 4.

fantastic new feature..thanks Todd. However I'm a little curious how you came up with your phase calculations. For instance most sites have January 3 as the full moon (spaceweather.com as well as the US Naval observation site) whereas you have it as January 4.

This question has been bugging me for a while, because I could not locate the reason for the full moon being shown as Jan 4th on my calendar.

Well, I finally found the culprit -- a tiny piece of test code that I had intended to remove before installation!

I have removed the test code, and we should be good to go right now.

BTW, I'll anticipate one question:  some lunar phase calendars/charts will show a particular phase as occuring (for example) on March 19th at 3:00 AM, but Lottery Post will be showing that event on March 18th.  The issue is that the 3:00 AM event is in Universal Time (also called Greenwich Mean Time), and the Lottery Post Lunar Calendar is showing the dates as perceived in the United States Eastern Standard Time, so five hours earlier would have that event occur the day before (at 11:00 PM).

                            Both are correct.

Eventually, there will be a feature in Lottery Post so that every member can set their own time zone, and then the Lunar Calendar will adapt to the individual user, but for now it is shown in United States Eastern Standard Time, just like the rest of the site.

For those looking for the exact dates and times of the lunar phases in Universal Time, I would recommend the following page:
