After looking at the locations of where all the winners were in the last Florida lotto raffle , one thing came to mind.  It appears as if the computer is picking the winners by location, not random numbers. this would make sense , as by picking random numbers,  you could end up with 40 winners in one city by coincidense which would cause an uproar.  The computer knows where each number is purchased. It's just common sense the LOTTO folks would use this information to their advantage and spread the winnings around to different locations to prevent winnings all from the same area.

any thoughts ?

I aggree with that thought.......the Michigan Lottery does a great job of "spreading the wealth"...

Have no idea of how they pull it off, and do not think it is wrong at all....

I am a true believer that there will always enough to go around and we will each have our turn at the Jackpot......we just have to have purchased a ticket in order to collect.

One ticket is all you need...and if it's your turn in the "bucket" you'll be off to the Lottery Office to collect a nice Check!

Lots of people look for a reason why they didn't win.  In reality, the only reason you didn't win is that you weren't lucky that day, in the same way that you were not struck by lightening in the last big storm.

Everyone is free to choose whatever opinion makes sense to them, and mine is that the lottery would never risk its complete destruction by systematically manipulating the winning numbers to determine who wins.  Don't you think the truth would leak out at some point if that were happening?

            I'm not looking for a reason I didn't win. I didn't expect to win . I 'm just making

an obvious observation . A leak from the lotto people , are you kidding ?  I don't

think so , who knows where all that money goes they make ????

Is it luck, or right place at the right time.  If that ticket is going to win whoever has it will be the winner.  I was at the casino about 10 years ago.  Had already won $1199.00 a half hour after i walked in on 3 red sevens.  Walked up to a bank of progressive quarter machines (double eagle) was the name.  Everyone of the 20 machines was being played, at the same time a gambler walked away from the machine 2nd from the end.  I stepped up and put a $20.00 in, was still very happy from all the money i had just won thirty mins ago, on the third spin i looked at the lady next to me and said would'nt it be nice if, and at that moment double eagles lined up center line for a $25,699.00 jackpot.  Luck and timing are they one in the same?  The money was a gift from above, we were able to start a business and are very blessed.  Good luck and God Bless.

It's not a good thing if the numbers are being selected by cities, or whatever.

It should pick out numbers the same way randomness picks it, whatever the seed the programmer uses. It's a good seed as any other. If it happens to show that 40 people won in one city .... Oh well....that's one way randomness works. The only people who will be in an uproar are the ones who don't understand chaos and flukes that may or may not appear.

Great story, dld1961!  About 20 years ago I worked with a woman who won around $400,000 in the slots.  I'm still waiting!

Sector, where did you get that idea?  I wouldn't say the Raffle Tickets were "evenly spread" at all.  There are many parts of Florida where nobody won and several winners in other areas.  Usually it's spread out by population, which makes sense.  Look at the 12 winners of the top prize.  The first listed is Miami (where else? lol)  Hialeah Gardens is also part of Miami.  Hallendale Beach is on A1A just north of Miami as you cross over into Broward County.  Wilton Manors is in Broward on the other side of Fort Lauderdale.  Then 3 of the $100,000 winners were from Miami.  I counted 22 locations in Miami-Dade County where the $10,000 prize was won, but my eyes began to water so I might be off by a couple!  Several winners were from Jacksonville, Cape Coral, Orlando....places where lots of people live.

You only think it looks like winners are picked by location because you don't understand the probabilities of the possible outcomes. For the people who run the lotteries and understand the mathcommon sense is to let randomness do its work.

Even if 90% of all lottery tickets were sold in the same area there's only a  1.5% chance that all 40 winners would come from that area. There's much less than a 1.5% chance that 90% of the tickets would be sold in a single area. Even without understanding the math, a rudimentary grasp of randomness should lead people to conclude that the distribution of winners will tend to match the distribution of tickets sold.

Not sure , but if that's the case , they could do anything they wanted.

I Agree!   However, I don't think the Florida games are computer generated.  The QPs are computer generated, but not the actually drawings.

I suppose the raffles are different.  They also might be planned but I seriously doubt it.  The largest concentration of winners were in the MSAs (metropolitan statitistical areas) with the densest populations.  There were some scattered winners in small towns in rural areas but, for the most part, winners were in the Miami/Ft Lauderale area, the Orlando/Kissimmee/St Cloud area, Jacksonville, etc.  2 of the million dollar winners were in Largo which is the St Petersburg/Clearwater area.  (is it sort of obvious that I've traveled around the state?)  But look at the $100,000 winners and 2 more were purchased in Largo.    When the Lottery Fairy sprinkles her magic dust upon you, it will be your lucky day.  Right place, right time.
