Saturday Jackpot for Powerball is $300 Million.

How did they know so fast?

It took less than an hour.

Usually, when the jackpot is large, they wait after midnight to announce the new jackpot.

I'd like to know why MM takes so long. I haven't seen a  result before 2 AM (eastern) for a very long time, even for small jackpots.  I can't see any reason why each state couldn't have an answer in 30 minutes. Among other things, the data could be split into separate databases for each powerball, so they would be searching through no more than perhaps 5% of the total records, which one would hope have already been sorted numerically.

MM statistically reaches the larger markets and would take longer to assess.  The Ohio Lottery site generally has the Mega Million update on Tuesdays no later than 0115 and on Fridays no later than 0145.  They also update the lump sum amount the evening of the drawing which I never notice the MM site doing.

Congratulations to Indiana to winning the PB jackpot. It was someone from Ohio winning it all.
