A forum for off-topic discussion is common for many of these kinds of sites. How about an OT forum so we can post rants about whatever is on our minds?

It can, but I thought that being able to have active discussions in the same manner as the rest of the forums wouldn't hurt either.

There have been some suggestions for this, and I've resisted so far.  There are a couple of people here who would use the opportunity to turn it into a radical political forum, and I'm not sure I have the stomach for that.

Is there some way to avoid that?  I haven't thought of one, or the off-topic forum would exist today.

The only way I could think of avoiding it would be to moderate it, or simply be more proactive in purging the posts. It might become a pain in the doopa to do either. The only 3rd option I can think of would be to block users who go off the deep end.

The trouble is that three or four people will give me such a hard time when I delete offensive posts that it isn't worth it. If lots of people came to my defense it would be different, but they don't.
