How does one change this...

I cut and paste past numbers into a column yet it gives me a date instead of the number.

Like this below..

Thu, Apr 24, 20082/6/2007
Wed, Apr 23, 20084/8/2003

How do I change this to get my pick 3 number in the 2nd column?

Thanks

Select the cells in the second column and then right click on the selection.  Choose "Format Cells..." and then change the format from "Date" to "General".  That should do it!

You need to format the cells to NUMBER. Chose which cells you want to format and right click. Chose Format Cells and pick Category: General from the Number tab. Click OK.

After you change the format of the cells you will have to repaste your pick 3 results.

Right click the cell where you want to paste the results and then try "Paste Special..." instead of "Paste".  When the Paste Special Box appears, select the "values" box.  See what that does.

There are 2 columns... one is the actual date, the other one is the number.  When I paste special it combines both into one cell... is that correct?  Can it be posted to 2 different cells if both cells are highlighted when pasted?  I have to use special paste and then unicode text

                Thanks for all your help.

Sorry, Rakster, but you kind of lost me there.  I'm not sure what's going on with your spreadsheet.  I use the same format for mine - the first column is the dates and the second column is the actual draws.

If you copy multiple cells, then you should be able to paste all of them by just selecting the top of the range where you want them to be pasted and then "paste special" or "paste".  I guess I would understand the problem better if I knew what you were copying the data from.

I am copying numbers from here on LP..

                    Illinois Midday pick 3.

I copy them and go to the spreadsheet but  all I get is a mess and do not want the hassle of deleteing the date for every number that I pasted.. too time consuming.. .thought for sure that there was a way to do this without the hassle.

I thought that would work but it turns all pk 3 numbers to a date except the odd number when I copy it from the wordpad to the spreadsheet.. same thing happenes...dates... wt??

Ah, okay, Rakster.  I will explain the way I get data into excel.  It's a little bit more complicated, but it works great.

                            1.  Create a new blank text document and name it "pick3results" or whatever you want.

                            2.  Paste the data from LP into the text document and save it.

                            3.  Open up a new excel file.

                            4.  Select the "Data" tab, "Import External Data...", "Import Data..."

                            5.  Locate the text file you created and select open.

                            6.  Click the "Delimited" circle and then "next"

                            7.  Check the "space" box and then "next"

                            8.  Now choose which columns you want to export and "finish"

Rakster, another option, which will work better for the way LP formats the dates is to select "fixed width" instead of "delimited" and then you can create a break between the date and the pick 3 results so that your data imports into two columns like you want.  I hope this helps.
