    I wonder if there will be a matrix change now that another state has Powerball.

      Yeah somebody started a thread about it here.

        I'm not sure why Florida is doing this, for a state lottery they get pretty decent jackpot amounts.

        If you're a business owner in a community without a Wal Mart, you don't invite Wal Mart, right?

        Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

        There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

            If you're looking to bring/keep more money into the state, you might. A Wal-Mart (PowerBall) in your town (Florida) keeps people from going into the next town (Georgia) to shop at the Target (MegaMillions) there.

              Well as for bringing money into the state Florida does quite well, and as far as I know Orlando is still the number one tourist destination in the world.

              When the casino industry was getting into state after new state (which has stagnated now) they used the same kind of argument. What actually happened though was for all the promised monies coming into those states the reality was the boats were little money vacuums sucking the money up and sending it to Vegas and Atlantic City.

              I think if I lived in Florida I'd rather not see Powerball come in and stick with the thus far decent Florida lottery jackpots.

              Before The Big Game (now Mega Millions) Illinois used to get some pretty good jackpots on their pick 6. Not so anymore.

              Current Florida jackpot:

              $3 PLAY
              $34 Million
              $2 PLAY
              $19 Million
              $1 PLAY
              $9 Million

              Odds: 1:22,957,480

              I just think the Florida lottery is cutting their own throat by doing this.

              And let's see what happens to the PB matrix, as Guru101 mwntioned.

              $ 15 Million
                  $ 7.3 Million Cash Value

              Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

                It does only work up to a point. As I posted in another thread, there's only so much lottery money out there; then the games (or coffeeshops) start to cannibalize each other.

                  Funny - before I went to bed last night I sent an email to a friend saying I'm cutting down on lottery tickets.

                    I lived in Florida for many years, and I can verify (or testify) that Florida has no state income tax.

                      Florida has no state income tax but you would still need to pay your state tax if you live in another state.   The "no tax" only applies if you are a resident of FL when you win.  (Of course there is always federal income tax due.)  Florida is a lot like Texas and doesn't tax income or dividends.  However, they make up for it in property taxes and other "fees."   The wages in FL are also comparatively lower.

                      Time*treat, there will definitely be some cannibalization, so I hope the Lotto & Fantasy 5 jackpots don't decrease.  Pick-3 and pick-4 players will probably continue to purchase at the same level.   At least the game is starting in January when a lot of snowbirds with money visit.  I'm sure PB will generate more revenue for Florida.

                        I think it's long over due that there is no federal tax on lottery winnings from state run games. We are the only country regressive enough do to this. There is also no state income tax in WA state but they have plenty of other taxes.

                          I agree with you, but be happy they don't charge sales tax on the lottery tickets!  That'll be next.

                            Yeah but property taxes (and potential city/county taxes) and other fees still certainly won't equal a regular state income tax such as Michigan's 4.35%, would it? Say you won 20 million dollars after the federal taxes, in Michigan that would equal to around $87,000 (I know I'm taking it off the wrong end but it's just an example) not to mention that states own property taxes and whatever else can get tacked on. You wouldn't expect to pay that much in fees, property and other taxes would you? I know property taxes are high there, but they can't be that high unless you own a very, very expensive home and property. Skeptical Now that the bubble has burst how long will it take for property values to get back close to where they were before the market went nuts with building down there?

                            If I were to move after winning a good size lottery, I think I'd move back down there and either buy a new home or build one if I can't find what I want, nothing fancy, just a certain layout/floor plan, probably wouldn't want a McMansion or anything like that, plus I'd have it where I want it which is a good area and hopefully with city water and sewer (I hate well water and septic tanks, too many bad experiences with both) and live comfortably off my interest and dividends while doing what I want.

                            Florida's lack of anonymity would probably turn me off from playing the lottery there ever again, not like I'd need the money anyway unless I went stupid.

                            You can't predict random.
