I just finished updating the Event Calendar with all the raffle games for this holiday period (Dec. 2008 - Jan. 2009).

I'm surprised at the number of states that are not doing a raffle this year.  Personally, I love the raffle games, so I'm happy to see that N.J. kept their raffle going this year.

States with holiday raffles

Here is the list of states (plus Québec) that I have compiled raffle information for, and which are posted on the Event Calendar.

  • Idaho (Dec. 30)
  • Delaware (Dec. 31)
  • Florida (Dec. 31)
  • Ohio (Dec. 31)
  • Virginia (Dec. 31)
  • Minnesota (Jan. 1)
  • Pennsylvania (Jan. 3)
  • Michigan (Jan. 5)
  • Arizona (Jan. 8)
  • Québec (Jan. 11)
  • Missouri (Jan. 20)
  • New Jersey (Jan. 21)

States without holiday raffles

I was really surprised by the traditionally-strong lottery states that opted to go without a holiday raffle this year.  I think that's a bad idea, but hey, what do I know, I just like to play.

All of these states has had a raffle at least once before:

  • California
  • Georgia
  • Iowa
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • North Carolina
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin

The raffles are selling very well in the states that are having a raffle drawing this year.  This follows the trend of strong lottery sales despite the weak economy.  Lotteries (and gambling in general) are generally not affected by downturns in the economy.  What are these states thinking?

Lots of information posted

The Event Calendar entries for the raffle games have lots of information, including number of tickets available, prices, prizes, odds, dates, draw processes, taxes, and much more.  Just click on the event date, and the information will popup in a window.

If you're playing a raffle this year, GOOD LUCK!  My fingers are crossed for a LP member to win big.

I'm glad that Idaho is participating in the holiday raffle again. I am playing, but I only bought one ticket this time. I decided that last year, I went overboard with buying tickets and I am trying to be a bit more responsible with playing.

        No, only within the state.

Young Chuck moved to Texas and bought a donkey from a farmer for $100.00. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day he drove up and said, Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the donkey died.'
          Chuck replied,
'Well, then just give me my money back.'
          The farmer said,
'Can't do that. I went and spent it already.'
          Chuck said,
'Ok, then, just bring me the dead donkey.'
          The farmer asked,
'What ya gonna do with him?'
          Chuck said,
'I'm going to raffle him off.'
          The farmer said,
'You can't raffle off a dead donkey!'
          Chuck said,
'Sure I can Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead.'
A month later, the farmer met up with Chuck and asked,
'What happened with that dead donkey?'
          Chuck said,
'I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a profit of $998.00.'
          The farmer said,
          'Didn't anyone complain?'
          Chuck said,
'Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.'
Chuck now works for the government.

Todd, should Rhode Island be on your first list?  Any others?
