Your number have to match all the same digits as the winning numbers for box hit, and exact order and digit for straight hit.
Using your example. The winning number is 1234, that's single number, with 4 unique digits. Your pick is 1134, which is a double, with 3 unique numbers; 1,3,4 while 1 is a double (two of the same digits). If your number was 1324 you would be a winner, if you played box.
In pick 4, box hits meaning you must have the same amount of unique digits as the winning combinations but does not have to be in the same position, while straight hit you must have the same amount of unique digits along with exact position of those digits.
winning combo 1234 - BOX = 1234(1243,1324,1231,1423,1432,2134,2143,2314,2341,2413,2431) in any order
winning combo 1234 - Straight = 1234 (exact order to win)
winning combo 1234 - BOX/Straight = 1234(1243,1324,1231,1423,1432,2134,2143,2314,2341,2413,2431) if you did not get a straight, you will win box.
