  We can't say what will happen tonight, but with better odds and a higher cash value, the MegaMillions jackpot is a better deal than Powerball, if you're choosing to buy tickets for a big one.

  I happened to be in PA (where I bought, I confess, a Powerball ticket), and I remarked on this to the clerk and some of the people on line expressed surprise at this simple fact.

  Right now the pretax expectation value (based on cash) for Megamillions is about 0.89, whereas for Powerball it is 0.76.
