With the state budget more than two months late and continued discord in Albany, the fear of an unprecedented shutdown of state government is getting more attention among state planners.

A shutdown would likely mean a fraction of the number of troopers patrolling highways and investigating crimes, delayed tax refunds, suspension of lottery games and closed unemployment offices just when the state is hovering around its highest unemployment rate in decades.

Wow! Eek

New York's numbers have had deviations that don't jive....................this probably sheds light on why.  If anyone in NY wins big it might be a good idea to take a lump sum versus annuity (if there is a cash or annuity option).............

Best case I've heard for choosing the Lump Sum payment.   Take your money and get out of there!!  The way NY State Taxes and Spends the peoples money the state is near bankrupt.   Not to mention the spending in Washington DC......    So even if the state gov't can afford your annuity payments ...with the inflation your money isn't going to be worth jack in 20-25 years.     Call me crazy but I'm going to have an emergency bunker for when/if this country goes bankrupt and people are going nuts.......  Get a safe large piece of land....Large stocks of Food/Weapons.. And some  Gold/Silver coins to barter.......Just in case....  When news like the debt is 80% of the GDP we are getting close....Patriot

Good point on the annuity, Keystone. This has been discussed before but when we have more inevitable Cash vs Annuity threads this situation in New York should be a default! "Consider the NY lottery & state government."

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

                    Lep

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Michigan was going to shut down the lottery a couple years ago for lack of funds.

They had a long list  the casinos , the racetracks, the lotteries anything that fell under the jurisdiction of the lottery. EXCEPT !!!!!!!!!!! THE BINGO HALLS . AND GUESS WHAT ..THEY ALSO FALL UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE LOTTERY. Now you may ask why? Because it was election year, and guess what , most of the bingo halls are democratic commitees . the money they raise goes right to the general fund. Guess where all the gamblers go if there is no casinos or racetracks or lottery. New Yorkers ask yourself, if they shut down the lottery where will your gambling dollars go?

I thought I heard they were suspending 'special games'  not the entire lottery.  I would think the lottery doesn't need money from the state to operate day to day.

Money won is twice as good as money earned!
