Are Sports Fixed?

Date:
06-12-10

Host:
Ian Punnett

Guests:
Brian Tuohy

IanPunnett welcomed sports conspiracy expert, Brian Tuohy, who argued thatthe outcomes of professional sports games are decided in advance inorder to increase market share and maintain popularity with the fanbase. Whenever leagues need a game or series to go their way, itusually does, Tuohy said. As an example, he referred to Super Bowl III(1969), in which the NFL's heavily favored Baltimore Colts weredefeated by the underdog New York Jets of the AFL. Tuohy believes thegame was rigged to establish the AFL's credibility. There is proof thatat least 70 NFL games have been fixed, he added.

As anotherpiece of evidence, Tuohy pointed to the baseball season immediatelyfollowing the 1994–95 MLB strike. At a time when they needed toreignite the public's interest in baseball, players suddenly beganhitting homeruns at a record-breaking pace, he said. Tuohy furtherobserved that Game 7 of the World Series has occurred more often thanit should have. In the 40 years from 1949 to 1989, statistically halfof the World Series have gone the full distance, he said.

Inbasketball, Tuohy spoke about disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy, whoallegedly bet on games that he officiated. Tuohy admitted it is hard toprove if Donaghy actually fixed any games, but his legal troubles didapparently reveal that Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finalsbetween the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings had been rigged bytwo referees. "There is no law that prevents the NBA from fixing theirown games," he added.

The enormously popular world of NASCARracing has its own legend about how races are fixed, Tuohy continued.According to the legend, known as 'The Call,' racers receivenotification that they have been chosen to win a particular race. Tuohysuggested that Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s victory at the 2001 Pepsi 400 mayhave been the result of such a call. Several drivers even admitted theydid not want to pass Earnhardt, as his father had been killed at thesame track only few months earlier, Tuohy said.

Tuohy alsodiscussed the suspicious winning streak of NHL teams who relocate tothe southern United States, stadium deals, and the relationship betweenpolitics and sports, as well as commented on the recent missed goalduring the World Cup soccer match between England and America.

I remember back in either 07 or 08 when The Dallas Mavericks owner (Mark Cuban) said "some of these games are pre-determined" and that cost him $50,000!!  It's no secret among the handicappers who cap soccer that ALOT of the Brazil matches are "fixed".  I know last year there were several NFL games that the outcome was just very "suspicious".  I have NOT bet tennis in over 3 years due to too many "suspicious" outcomes in which the winner was a large underdog.

I am of the belief in cases like these, if you win these games, then you got lucky!!

At one of the casinos I worked in the wife of an ex-NFL QB used to show up. she herself was an entertainer, British in fact. It was football season and she was hitting six and seven teamers consistently. Well, one Monday night the pit boss saw her coming out of the show room and called her over and asked what she liked in the Over / Under for that nights' game. She said "Over under what?" He said, "You're kidding, the way you've been hitting parlays" and she said, "Oh, those aren't my pickes, they are (the ex-QB)".

A good post Coin  & should be informative to all who naively want to be beleive that it's all on the level-

CAUSE & EFFECT:                                                                                                              Whenever big money is involved in any form of speculation (including Wall St)  there is BIG motivation to ensure a favorable outcome.

I remember one Monday night game, the Redskins were at home and the over/ under was 38 or 37 1/2. The redsking got the ball inside the other teams' 20 with over a minute left, the score at the time was 20-17 Washington, and then didn't even attempt to get near the goal line.

One announcer said he didnlt know why they weren't trying to score, and the other one said, "Oh I think i know why."

There's an old movie called The Harder They Fall, with Humphrey Bogart. This was the last film he was in before his death.

                      Here's the plot, from IMBD:

                      Plot Summary for
                      The Harder They Fall

Jobless sportswriter Eddie Willis is hired by corrupt fight promoterNick Benko to promote his current protégé, an unknown Argentinian boxernamed Toro Moreno. Although Moreno is a hulking giant, his chances forsuccess are hampered by a powder-puff punch and a glass jaw. ExploitingWillis' reputation for integrity and standing in the boxing community,Benko arranges a series of fixed fights that propel the unsophisticatedMoreno to #1 contender for the championship. The reigning champ, thesadistic Buddy Brannen, harbors resentment at the publicity Toro hasbeen receiving and vows to viciously punish him in the ring. Eddie mustnow decide whether or not to tell the naive Toro the truth.
                      ///////////////////////////////////////////
There' a scen in the movie where Bogart questions a promoter about fixed fights, saying "What about the people?" The promoter says, "The people, the fight fans? As long as they have a fight on TV and a few beers they're happy. That's the people."
                      Excellent movie, well worth seeing.

Good movie recommendation Coin, will check it out

Consider a race at a major track where several professional expert public handicappers select a favorite to win and next two to be in the money-

An all of a sudden this 50-1 that nobody even noticed comes out the backstretch like BeatleBomb and flies acroos the finish line- np cmyesy.

Just look at the past performances and see how often this happens....

Just check out yet another confirming published story in the New York Times

Death Linked to Race-Fixing @ Bay Meadows-

                        SAN FRANCISCO, July 13— "

A ring suspected of fixing races at California thoroughbred tracks is part of an F.B.I. and state investigation that includes the case of a top jockey who died mysteriously in 1993.

The investigation includes an August 1996 race at Bay Meadows in San Mateo that was allegedly fixed in an effort to win at least $280,000 at Nevada casinos, believed to be the largest trifecta payout in the state's history. The same ring also made bets on that race at casinos as far away as Jamaica, winning an unknown amount of money.

In a related matter, the United States attorney's office in Los Angeles last week unsealed charges against a jockey and a bettor accused of fixing races at Los Alamitos Race Course in 1995.

The two cases prompted the F.B.I. to reopen the investigation of Ron Hansen, a top Northern California jockey whose body was found in San Francisco Bay after he disappeared in October 1993, said a Federal law enforcement source who spoke on condition of anonymity."

There are many, many more -too many - worse then bullfifgting

Linda McMahon the CEO of the WWE is the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut and she describes her company's product as a weekly soap opera. Don't worry if the fix is in and the bad guy wins, Tiggs because eventually the "good" guy will beat the "bad" guy and regain the title.
