ST LOUIS (LALATE) – An earthquake today 2014 just hit South Carolina and Georgia, just east of Atlanta. The earthquake today February 14, 2014 began moments ago. Damage assessment is pending.
Officials tell news that a 4.4 magnitude South Carolina earthquake today hit just after 10:23 pm local time. The quake was shallow. It began only three miles below ground level. As a result the quake could be felt across the region.
USGS indicates to news that the quake was seven miles west of Edgefield, South Carolina. The quake was nineteen miles north of Evans, Georgia. It was east of Atlanta, Georgia and west of North Augusta. Reps tell news that the quake was roughly sixty miles southwest of Colombia, South Carolina.
USGS reports to news that “Earthquakes in the central and eastern U.S., although less frequent than in the western U.S., are typically felt over a much broader region. East of the Rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast.” They add that “A magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source. “
