The Melbourne Cup is Australia's major annual thoroughbred horse race. Billed as 'the race that stops a nation', it is a race for horses aged three-years-old and over, and covers a distance of 3200 metres. Melbourne Cup Day is held on the first Tuesday of November every year. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria.

Many people, who don't usually bet on racing, have a go!

Dunaden has been crowned the winner of the 2011 Melbourne Cup after one of the closest races in living memory.

The French second-favourite, who paid $8.20 for the win and $3.10 for the place, edged out England's Red Cadeaux by a millimetre to take out the $6 million race that stops a nation at Flemington.

After the closest finish in the 151-year history of the race, German horse Lucas Cranach completed an international sweep of the placings.
