Peace.

wow, I find it hard to believe that it is statistically possible unless it is something preset.

Statistically impossible?  Preset?    Not hardly.  It happens commonly and more than players realize.

It not only happens in NY, but has happened many times in other states Pick5 games all over The USA.  Florida's Fantasy5 has seen it happen 75 times since July 16, 2001.  Most recent time it happened was just last week on 8/20/2023.

This is a topic that has been discussed here and elsewhere for a very long time. Tique's post is just his most recent post about it happening.  Look back through this thread and you'll see all of the other post's he made  just like the one above.  G5

thank you. I will.

You're welcome.

I haven't looked at other states Pick5 games in a long time so I thought I'd do this -

Massachusetts Mass Cash has seen 1 set of 5 numbers drawn 3 times... 4 10 24 25 27  (on 4/7/2013, on 1/22/2014 & on 7/24/2015)  Mass Cash also has seen 69 times where the same set of five numbers was drawn twice in 6,677 draws held since  March of 1991.

California Fantasy5 has had  69 draws where the same set of five numbers was drawn twice since 2001. Last time it happened in Cali was on 5/2/2023.

Missouri Show Me Cash has seen it happen 25 times in 5,470 draws held since 2008.

Florida Fantasy5 has had 75 draws where the same set of five numbers was drawn twice since July of 2001.

Michigan Fantasy5 saw it happen 41 times in more than 8,000 draws held since 2005.

Ohio Rolling Cash has had it happen 34 times in 6,767 drawings.  (That seems light to me.. could be I looked at the wrong history file. I feel like there should be more than 34 times in almost 7,000 darwings.)

There are other states Pick5 games in addition to the states shown above. Too many to list.  The matrices of all the states games listed above aren't 5/39...it varies from state to state. For instance Florida Fantasy5 has a 5/36 matrix whereas Take5's is 5/39.

One thing to keep in mind is draw order/sequence. After a drawing, each state sorts and then reports the five winning numbers drawn from lowest to highest.  My guess is that if you took a look at the sequence the numbers were drawn in, then there WOULD NOT be as many times where it happened.  But draw order doesn't matter with regard to winning the jackpot....  you just have to match all five winning numbers drawn no matter what sequence they were drawn in.  G5

I know.    This is stupid...replying to my own post... but I'm gonna do it anyway!

I have shown the above stats to many people.  Most react with amazement.  And many said "That should not happen!"  I said "Yeah I know. I agree, but it did happen, and it continues to happen.  A lot."

I have a daughter that's a math whiz...she majored in math in college...math has been her thing all her life, and this same set of five numbers being drawn twice thing drove her crazy.  We locked horns over it for a while.  Eventually we settled our differences on this - she and her math theories exist in a theoretical world, and man made clear plastic ball and drum lottery machines live here in the physical world.  That may have something to do with why it happens, but then RNG software programs blow that theory away because they see it commonly happen too.  So I have no reasonable explanation as to why it happens. Best I can come up with is the draw order/sequence idea.

Net of it all is that it happens commonly in Pick5 games all across The USA.  It happens in so many of them I doubt the fix is in.  It's just one of life's crazy mysteries that most would think or say "Nah.  That doesnt happen because it cant happen."  Yeah right.  G5

Here's something to ponder with regard to a set of the same five numbers being drawn twice -

In Florida Fantasy5, for something that "should not happen" it didn't take long for it to happen.

On  11/10/2003 (the 789th drawing of Fantasy5)  this set of five numbers was drawn - 10 15 17 19 32.

635 drawings later (draw #1425 held on 8/7/2005) they were drawn for a second time.  It only took a total of 1,425 drawings for it to happen for the first time.

FF5 started on 7/16/2001 and by 8/7/2005 (a little over 4 years time) a set of five numbers had been drawn for the second time.

And it's happened 74 additional times since 8/7/2005.  G5
