Here’s how to help victims of the Texas Panhandle wildfires
The most urgent needs are financial donations, non-perishable food and feed and hay for livestock.

Wildfires are ravaging the Texas Panhandle, threatening homes, farms and businesses, and prompting evacuations of several towns.
Several fires merged as of Thursday morning, creating the largest fire in Texas history, with more than 1 million acres scorched, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. The largest of the fires, the Smokehouse Creek Fire, has burned 1,075,000 acres and is now larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.
An 83-year-old grandmother from the town of Stinnett is the lone confirmed fatality, but authorities have not yet conducted a thorough search for victims. They have warned the damage to some communities is extensive.
Towns and organizations are collecting donations to help displaced victims, hay and feed for livestock, and even art supplies for children whose parents are tending to the fire and cleanup effort.
Here are a few ways to help.
Financial donations
Towns, fire departments and aid organizations say monetary donations are the most helpful. Several cities, banks and nonprofits have set up accounts. The following is a list of places accepting donations.
The Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund is accepting donations through the Amarillo Area Foundation. The fund helps residents who have lost homes, businesses, out-buildings, vehicles, livestock, grazing land and fencing. Donations can be made online. Checks can also be mailed to Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund, 919 S. Polk, Amarillo, TX, 79101.
Hutchinson County United Way says it will direct funds to help people with long-term needs returning to their homes after the fires.
Amarillo National Bank is accepting donations at all bank branches. Donations will be funneled to the Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund.
Donations can be made to the City of Pampa by calling FirstBank Southwest Pampa at 806-665-2341 or in person at 321 W. Francis, Pampa. Donations also can be mailed to the City of Pampa, P.O. Box 2499, Pampa, TX, 79066-2499, Attn: Finance. Please reference 2/27/24 Fire.
In addition, HF&C Feeds Amarillo is accepting donations under “Disaster Relief Fund.” Donations can be made by calling 806-622-9800.
Food, toiletries, art supplies
Donations can be dropped off at the Borger Dome Civic and Convention Center, 1113 Bulldog Blvd., in Borger. Needs are nonperishable food, toiletries and diapers. Clothes and household items are discouraged at this time.
Bubba’s 33, 2813 W. Interstate 40 in Amarillo, is accepting nonperishable food, bottled water, diapers and toiletries.
Area Girl Scouts are offering activities at local churches for children whose parents are tending to the fire and clean-up effort. They are accepting donations of coloring books, crayons and children’s games. General donations, like bottled water, sports drinks, toiletries, diapers and wipes, nonperishable food, blankets, and pet food, are also accepted. Donations can be dropped off at:
Amarillo Girl Scout office: 7620 Hillside Rd., Suite 300.
Volunteer University, March 8-10 at Camp Rio Blanco.
Volunteer University, March 15-17 at Stevens Ranch.

Update:
Boeing officials ✈️ have failed to fully cooperate with US investigators looking into how a panel blew off a 737 Max 9 in January, according to testimony at a Senate hearing Wednesday. The National Transportation Safety Board hasn’t received all the documents and information it has sought from Boeing since the dramatic incident, agency Chair Jennifer Homendy told lawmakers. ⚖️

InternationalWomen’s Day, 8 March 2024: ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’
In a world facing multiple crises that are putting immense pressure on communities, achieving gender equality is more vital than ever. Ensuring women’s and girls’ rights across all aspects of life is the only way to secure prosperous and just economies, and a healthy planet for future generations. One of the key challenges in achieving gender equality by 2030 is an alarming lack of financing with a staggering USD 360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures. The time for change is now! Join us on 8 March 2024 for International Women’s Day as we rally behind the call to “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”. Take a stand and join the conversation with the #InvestInWomen hashtag. Here are five key areas that need our joint action to ensure women are not left behind: Investing in women: A human rights issue Time is running out. Gender equality remains the greatest human rights challenge. Investing in women is a human rights imperative and cornerstone for building inclusive societies. Progress for women benefits us all. Ending poverty The COVID pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, climate disasters, and economic turmoil have pushed an extra 75 million people into severe poverty, since 2020. This could lead to more than 342 million women and girls living below the poverty line by 2030, making immediate action crucial. Implementing gender-responsive financing Due to conflicts and rising fuel and food prices, recent estimates suggest that 75 per cent of countries will curb public spending by 2025. Austerity negatively impacts women and crowds out public spending on essential public services and social protection. Shifting to a green economy and care society The current economic system exacerbates poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, disproportionately affecting women and marginalized groups. Advocates for alternative economic models propose a shift towards a green economy and care society that amplifies women’s voices. Supporting feminist change-makers Feminist organizations are leading efforts to tackle women’s poverty and inequality. However, they are running on empty, receiving a meagre 0.13 per cent of total official development assistance.

Robot 🤖 future . Amazon workers got a glimpse of a new robot that could one day toil alongside them, or instead of them. Agility Robotics has targeted the warehousing industry with two-legged bots and sees them eventually stocking shelves and working in hospitals. JPMorgan Chase, for its part, helped some of its corporate customers slash manual work by almost 90% with its currently free cashflow management tool that runs on artificial intelligence. Then there was a Microsoft staffer who warned the company and regulators about the potential of harmful AI content.

US just had its warmest winter in history thanks to El Nino
The El Niño pattern kept frigid temperatures locked up at the poles, giving the U.S. an unusually mild winter that has already seen the country's first billion-dollar disaster.
Winter comes to an end as one of the warmest on record in North America
The U.S. widely experienced a warmer and less snowy winter than is typical due to a lack of cold air and a strong El Niño.
The winter 2023-24 is going down in history as the hottest on record for the contiguous U.S. in 130 years of record keeping, according to NOAA.
During February, record-breaking heat, over the century mark in some cases, baked Texas and much of the central U.S. during what is traditionally one of the coldest months of the year. Killeen, Texas, became the first city to hit 100 degrees for the calendar year on Feb. 26. FOX Weather calculated that 1,327 cities broke daily record highs for the month.
This was also the winter with a record low ice extent across the Great Lakes. As of Feb. 11, only 2.7% of the Great Lakes were covered in ice. On average, 50% of the lakes are covered in ice by that point in winter.
