I like to check the Florida Lottery Annual Reports to see what's really going on with lottery sales. (The reports above are for fiscal years.) The latest graph (2014-2015) for some reason was found in the Financial Report, as opposed to the Annual Report, where they had been published up until now.
You can see the Cash 3 and Play 4 holding pretty steady over the years. Fantasy 5 has a little fluctuation, but still pretty steady. You can see Florida Lotto drop like a rock once Powerball was on the menu. In the most recent graph, Powerball sales dropped 2% over the previous year, I'm assuming because of the matrix change.
The most obvious and long-term trend is the scratch-off sales, clawing their way ever higher in percentage of sales. I know there are some dedicated scratch-off players who actually may have some strategy, but I can't help but think that a lot of those sales are impulse buys.
