Anyone get their ID checked when they buy lottery tickets? I'm 48 and one place I've been buying tickets for some time has just started IDing me. They don't just check my license, they also scan it with the lottery terminal. I wonder if they keep the info on every license they scan. I'm not sure I like that so I've started using a passport card as ID. It has name and date of birth, but no address and the lottery terminal can't scan it.

There's one chain of stores that IDs everyone, so I don't buy from those stores anymore. Looks like i'm going to have to take another store of the list if the start IDing everyone as well.

I've seen high school students wearing their school uniforms buying scratch offs and tickets in most of the places near my hometown. The lottery store near my college asked for ID the first time and then they never asked again. I would not return to a place that scans everyone, such a place has no common sense about how to run a business.

Why are they scanning your ID to purchase a lottery ticket ??? Is it a new requirement in your state ???

sounds very suspicious to me ...

unless they were under watch by the state lottery or the PD for selling booze/lottery tickets to under cover folks that looked under age

Yes, a chain of tobacco stores started IDing me every time and I quit going there too. I've never been ID'd anywhere else, but I noticed when I buy from the CS counter at a grocery store that the phrase "ID BYPASSED" flashes briefly on their screen.

It would be ridiculous to ID at the counter because the vending machines don't require ID. Hope that's not a foreshadow of things to come with machines requiring ID scans too. One more thing to go wrong with the machines. Geez.

Doesn't happen in Texas. It would seem it's the state requiring some if not all stores to try to keep underage people from buying tix, just like cigs and alcohol.

They would have to set up vending machines somehow to check id's.

I was in a gas station in CT and they had a scratch-off ticket vending machine. It required you to scan your driver licence in order to complete a purchase.

Maybe they are making too much money and they need to decrease sales??

Life is too short for crappy lottery games, only play the good ones.

This store is a supermarket I've been going to for years. The last 3 times I bought tickets there, they checked my ID and when I showed them my license, they scanned it in the terminal. I started using my passport card with them and they couldn't scan it, but they did enter something into the terminal, but I'm not sure what as I couldn't see.

There are plenty of other places that sell tickets here so I guess I won't buy from that supermarket anymore.

Weird. I've never been ID'd for lotto. Casinos yes but never lotto. Heck, the first time I bought alcohol I wasn't even ID'd (of course that was some time ago). Anyone really desperate for getting around the rules will always find somewhere willing to skirt them, and it's not the places that ID you.
- If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
- If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?
- I believe Joan Ginther ("world's luckiest woman") merely played lottery as a tax strategy. Evidence: zero prize claims through 10 years after her last Lotto Texas annuity payment!

Yeah, checking the age is one thing... But I do not like them sacnning anyone's ID, that starts to open some suspicious doors in my thinking...

i have not been asked for an ID yet any of the places I go.

I'd never give my id to buy tickets. I'd quit playing if everyone place started doing it...

Louisiana Driver's licenses(and I'm sure other states) have both a magnetic strip and an optical code on the back of them which can be scanned. The lottery terminals the clerks use here can scan the magnetic strip, while the vending machines use the optical code to verify age. My passport card doesn't have anything on it they can scan, so all they can do is put in the date of birth.

I don't know if these scanners(magnetic or optical) are just checking date of birth, or are they checking something else? If the answer to that question is yes, are they retaining that data and for what purpose? I know it sounds paranoid but in this day and age, one has to wonder.

I literally pass 9 stores that sell lottery tickets between my house and that particular supermarket, so I have plenty of options for tickets and when I've visited these other stores, I don't get my ID checked.

It's good to have options.

I don't blame you. I don't like have to show my ID for stuff either but when I do, I show them a passport card. Those don't have my address on them, just name, date of birth, and the state I was born in. Some clerks give me odd looks when I give them that, but they take it. One wasn't sure what to do with it since it wasn't able to be scanned and had to ask a coworker, but she didn't give me an argument after I pointed out it's a legal form of ID issued by the federal government.

I can tolerate occasionally being IDed, like one time a clerk at a store I used to go to that has since closed apologized to me because his manager told him to ID everyone that day because he heard the board that licenses liquor sales was doing a sting operation and didn't want to take any chances. Back then they just looked at the ID, but with the scanning now, I'm not so sure I can even put up with it happening occasionally anymore.
