  Hello.

  New here. I've long had the feeling that the East Coast states have considerably more winners of the largest jackpots (Powerball and Mega Millions) than the rest of the country. Are there any statistics showing the percentages of winners listed by state? I realize that population density is a factor but am still curious. Thanks.

  Thanks. I hadn't tried any searches. After visiting the link you posted, I did a search for top jackpots and winning states. Turns out Wikipedia has a page about lottery jackpot records, with a chart of the amounts won and in which states. I can't post the link since I'm new here.

  The Wikipedia page has several mistakes, and it is clear that they have used information from Lottery Post without giving credit.  It is very hard to compile an accurate list of historical jackpots, because the lottery does not always make it easy to track down the final jackpot tallies for cash and annuity.  Yet people continue to steal the hard work we do here at Lottery Post and USA Mega and post it on Wikipedia without proper credit.  (And I'm not mentioning the countless other lottery websites that steal our results and jackpot data.)

  If you want an accurate list, just look at the tail end of any of the several articles posted in the news section here at Lottery Post.  For example: https://www.lotterypost.com/news/319144

  Thanks very much for the link! That's exactly what I was looking for. In the article where it lists multiple states for a jackpot, does that mean that there were multiple winners who split the jackpot? It's probably a dumb question, but for example, in the first on the list, was it split between three winners:  Powerball: $1.5864 billion, Jan. 13, 2016 - California, Florida, Tennessee.

  I didn't realize Wiki and others have taken info from Lottery Post without giving credit. If anyone wants to take the time, you can go to the Wikipedia page to see how to contact them about it and request they add a footnote crediting Lottery Post. We have four Wikipedia pages; it takes time and patience.

  Yes, if you see multiple states listed then the jackpot was split by winning tickets sold in those states.

  The thing with the Wikipedia info is that lottery jackpot amounts and other data is not like copyrighted material.  It's just numbers that need to be tracked down.

  For years there were bad jackpot numbers included in all the "top 25" jackpot lists, because nobody ever took the time to research what the actual jackpot tally was after the draw.  This was especially true for cash values, and especially true for Mega Millions — because unlike Powerball, Mega Millions does not advertise the actual jackpot during the live drawing program.

  So I took the time to go back and research all the past jackpots — both cash and annuity values.  When someone reads a Lottery Post news story and copies the jackpot amounts into a Wikipedia page, that's not a copyright violation because they are just numbers.  But what they should do is provide a credit on the Wiki page stating that they got the information from Lottery Post (with a link to the source).  Several Wiki pages are guilty of this, over and over.

  In the past I think they begrudgingly gave Lottery Post a credit for an obvious copying of our information.  But it was not until the mods of the page first deleted a credit, and then was forced to put it back when I proved the information came from Lottery Post.  (Or maybe I'm thinking of a credit to USA Mega — but the point was that it was like pulling teeth to get a credit.)

  For the top jackpots list on Wikipedia, they included jackpot amounts I updated a while back, but missed some of the later updates I made with new information that I tracked down.  So their list contains some errors.

  The bottom line is that if you go back through the history of changes to the page you will notice that they update jackpot amounts without providing any citation of where the change came from.  They just change the number.  That's antithetical to the way a wiki is supposed to operate, and the lifting of Lottery Post data without proper credit is pathetic.

  Appreciate the clarifications. Wikipedia should indeed include Lottery Post in the credits/footnotes, not only to give credit but also to refer people to this site. They do a disservice to their customers by omitting it. I often click on the source links at the bottom of a Wikipedia page in order to learn more about a topic.

  In the March 15, 2018 article you linked to in your last message, it looks like you updated the list at the end: Top 25 26 United States lottery jackpots of all time. Will this list continue to be updated in future?
