  JERUSALEM –  Hundreds of Christians are marking Holy Easter by flocking to Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the site where they believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.

  Worshippers prayed and sang hymns Sunday in the church in Jerusalem's Old City as they lined up to admire the edicule, the chamber that tradition says marks Jesus' tomb.

  A historic Greek restoration was completed last year, aimed at reversing the effects of years of exposure to water, humidity and candle smoke. The limestone and marble structure stands at the center of the church — a 12th-century building standing on 4th-century remains.

  The Roman Catholic services were happening as eastern Orthodox Christians celebrated Palm Sunday. The denominations, which jealously guard different sections of the church, held separate services one after another.

  Going to walk the Via Dolorosa and see the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Israel at Easter/Resurrection is one place I would love to go before my life is over.

  Pope Francis led Roman Catholics in Good Friday services under tight security, urging people, including ministers of his Church, to rediscover the capacity to feel shame for their role in the world’s ills.

  Francis, 81, presided at a traditional Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) procession around Rome’s ancient Colosseum attended by 20,000 people on the day that Christians commemorate Jesus’ death by crucifixion.

  Francis wove his comments, made at the end of the torchlight service, around the themes of shame and repentance, conjuring up the image of a modern world where pride, arrogance and selfishness often trump humility and generosity.

  Good Friday, the most sombre day of the Christian liturgical calendar, commemorates the day the Bible says Jesus was crucified. The Way of the Cross service marks 14 events, called stations, from the time Roman governor Pontius Pilate condemns Jesus to death until his burial in a tomb. (Reuter)

  It is one of the most important weeks of the year for Christians.

   

  Today, on Easter Sunday, more than a billion people around the world will pause to recognize the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

   

  From his residency at St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, Cardinal Timothy Dolan -- Roman Catholic archbishop of New York -- spoke with Fox News’ Bill Hemmer about his message for millions of American Catholics this Holy Week – and specifically, his Easter Sunday sermon.

  "In my mind, I have been mulling over the Easter Message for the 40 days of Lent. Because Easter is the summit of everything we do and mean," the cardinal said.

  Hemmer – who anchors "America’s Newsroom" weekdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Fox News – asked Dolan for his reflections on how quickly the world moves today.

  '"You can't keep up. … I'm afraid the great temptation is to distract, because of the quick pace of everything, because of the bad news we hear," he said.

   

  "Pope Francis has spoken about this. As much as he praises technology and social communications, he says 'Thank God we've got those because they can bring us together.' But he said the temptation is we become distracted and we become reactive to these things.

   

  "And he would suggest, we always have to step back, we need a reflective posture, and that can only really come with some silence."

   

  Delving into how that impacts faith and religion, the cardinal said: "A lot of the things we used to do that encouraged silence and reflection, they're gone. I'm glad we got it because we can communicate, but they can turn us inward, they can make us – in a term that Pope Francis uses – they can make us self-referential.

   

  "Where, the essence of faith and really the essence of healthy, wholesome, productive human life, is to make God and other people the center of our lives."

  Dolan, 68, also discussed with Hemmer how his Midwestern childhood prepared him to serve as a leader of the Catholic Church in America, and the "Pope Francis effect" – five years into the papacy.
