Calling gambling a “game of chance” evokes fun, random luck and a sense of collective engagement. These playful connotations may be part of why almost 80% of American adults gamble at some point in their lifetime. When I ask my psychology students why they think people gamble, the most frequent suggestions are for pleasure, money or the thrill. While these might be reasons why people gamble initially, psychologists don’t definitely know why, for some, gambling stops being an enjoyable diversion and becomes compulsive. What keeps people playing even when it stops being fun? Why stick with games people know are designed for them to lose? Are some people just more unlucky than the rest of us......

There is an on going discussion about playing the mega jackpot games knowing the next to impossible odds against winning a jackpot. I suppose technically it's called gambling and could become compulsive, but over $400 a year bet on MM and PB is not even close to some of the casino, horse and dog racing, and other lottery games bets I saw over the years.
After losing a few hundred on my first trip to Reno I came to the conclusion, if I'm going to gamble I must learn how to play each game and formulate a consistent betting strategy. That doesn't always calculate into winning, but it sure cuts the losses, giving a chance to get lucky and catch a hot hand.
IMO the difference between "enjoyable and compulsive" is really a fine line because knowing a betting strategy should work, but watching it lose over and over and not knowing when to quit quickly turns what should be fun into a disaster.

OfflineThose who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.
There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.
