Scratch-offs are basically cannibalizing the draw games. Pick 3 and Pick 4 have remained pretty consistent sellers

(hard to tell because of the unfortunate color choices in the graph.) Every other game has seen reductions in sales,

including Fantasy 5, and even the mighty Powerball.

Sam, you are correct. I think that more Floridians like the instant gratification of the scratch-offs and Florida offers some of the best odds on scratch-off prizes in the country. In truth, most people have figured out that you can buy $100 in PB or MM tickets and likely end up with $4-$10 back. However, buying $100 in scratch-offs usually yields you $40-$60 unless you get very lucky or unlucky. And top prizes in the $10-$20 scratch-offs range from $2M to $5M which is still life-changing for most people.

I have largely cut back on draw games because of the continuous increasing the odds of winning a jackpot. In any event, I will buy a couple Fantasy 5 tickets to take advantage of the promotion. Not holding my breath on a big win though.

Agreed. Although at odds of 1/376,992, Fantasy 5 has the best odds of the Florida draw games, and is definitely winnable! (here's a pic of my win in 2014, towards the bottom of the page: Post Your Winning Tickets )

According to their annual reports, Florida also returns 64%-65% of sales revenue to the prize pools, which seems pretty decent to me. Unfortunately, the trend seems to be mammoth jackpots, with accompanying mammoth odds. That, plus the lower-tier prizes are ravaged to pump up the jackpot. I did some calculations a while back based on the prize payouts, and number of winners. For the Fantasy 5, tickets with 5/5 win (or split) 62% of the prize pool, 4/5 gets 10% of the prize pool, 3/5 gets 28% of the prize pool. I've hit the 4/5 prize twice, and I won less than $100 each time.

For myself, I would love to see a draw game that combined the best features of the daily games, and the draw games- sort of a hybrid game if you will. How about a 4/26 matrix, with prizes paid for 4/26 and 3/26. Odds are 1/14,950 for 4/26, and 1/169 for 3/26 (based on odds posted for Arizona Cash 4.) If 4/26 gets 50% of the prize pool, that would be around $4,700, (prize pool being 64% of sales revenue) and if 3/26 get 50% of the prize pool, that would be around $54.

That looks like being able to fund your play to me. What about a 50-cent play option like the daily games also? I would be all over a game like this! Instead, I just don't play much. I track the Fantasy 5 manually, but I might only play once or twice a year when the bias warrants it. I'd love to play more often, but Florida lottery doesn't offer many value games (and I stink at Pick 3 and Pick 4.)

Here's the result of the bump in the prize pools. 2 winners at $162,000 each equals top prize of $324,000. Fantasy 5 top prize has historically varied from around $170,000 to $250,000, depending on the day of the week. Also a nice little bump in the second- and third-tier prizes. Three more Fridays in the month, and I do have free tix to cash in... I'm gonna get in on this action!

(I should also mention that available top prize amounts have been declining recently, as evidenced by the declining sales illustrated in the graph above.)

As an aside, the Florida Fantasy 5 started as a 5/26 game back in '95. Top prizes were around $10,000- $20,000.

It will be interesting to see what happens if there is a roll-down. However, I expect the chances of a roll-down will be minimal because of the increase in ticket sales. Even this last drawing had two top prize winners.

There have been two roll-downs in the last three weeks, so not a frequent occurrence. I agree that with the sales increase on Fridays, we probably won't see a roll-down on those days. (I never say never with the lottery!)

The banquet you enjoy depends on what you bring to the table.

The main thing I dislike about the Fantasy 5 is that the 4/5 prize tier apparently has been pillaged to bump up the 3/5 tier.

I get that they want to bump up the jackpot, but if 4/5 paid out at the same % as the 3/5, the 4/5 prize should be around $300. Then there's this:

"If there is no top prize winner, the money in the top prize pool rolls down, and is shared equally among winners in the 4-of-5 prize level, with a maximum prize of $555 per winner. If the available roll down exceeds the $555 per winner maximum in the 4-of-5 prize level, the excess funds in the prize pool roll down and are shared equally among the winners in the 3-of-5 prize level."

In what other draw game do they artificially cap the payout on a whole prize tier? That is just wrong.

Maybe so, but I have to give them credit for something a little different from the other games out there, just I did when they had the 5/26, at least they're trying to hit some of the player's various requests on differing draw results.

Well, yesterday was the final day of the Fantasy 5 promotion, and nobody won the top prize, so there was a rolldown. I had a quick pick with 3 of 5 that pays $35. The 4 of 5 pays $833, so hopefully another LP player nabbed that!
