This happened to me the other day (about 3 draw ago)when I was playing Mega Millions in Ohio on the Ohio Turnpike. I stopped at a service plaza to buy some tickets. Instead of going to a store clerk, I went to a lotto machine to get my tickets. I usually test the machine to see if it will take a play slip because of problems in the past with lotto machines. Well, the machine literally ate the first playslip. Foolishly, thinking this is how this machine operates(waits for you to press a button before it will spit out the play slip along with the ticket) I put my money into the machine. Nothing happens, so I insert another play slip and it spits it out like most lotto machines and it dispenses a ticket. I was thinking that the machine was reading the ticket that was eaten by the machine. So, I insert the same play slip 3 more times until I was out of credits. The machine dispenses the tickets but never spits out the original play slip. Angry at the machine, and wanting to get the rest of my play slips ran, I go to a store clerk to get the rest of my tickets. I have the clerk run the 3 play slips that I have left including the one I kept inserting in to the machine. It's then that I find out that the play slip that I kept inserting was the same play slip for which I was getting tickets. I was super pissed that I had 5 of the same plays. Later on that night I thought, what if these tickets had the winning set of numbers and someone else won also. They would be all happy to have won the lottery, but find out they are sharing with 5 other ticket holders but find out that only 1 person is holding the other 5 tickets. They would only be entitled to 1/6 of the jackpot and the other person would get 5/6 of the jackpot. I'm sure the 1/6 winner would be pissed and probably even think about suing. I'm sure any lawyer, when understanding the facts of the situation, would tell them they don't have a case. However, seeing as they played and won in Ohio, an anonymous state. They may pay out a settlement in order to protect their anonymity. Of course, they'd have to sue the Ohio lottery and possibly the state of Ohio to get the other winner's name. What choice of action would you take? BTW, I WILL NEVER USE LOTTO MACHINES AGAIN!!!!

I'm no expert, but I'd say it's the ticket that wins, not the person who bought it. Let's say you hit all 5 white balls but no mega ball on all 5 tickets: You would be holding $5M, not $1M, because each ticket won $1M. Therefore, if you are holding 5 jackpot winning tickets, and another person is holding a 6th jackpot winning ticket, you are the 5/6ths jackpot winner!

Their issue would not be with the other winner, it would be with the Ohio Lottery. It would be up to the OL to prove that the 5/6 was paid out. It shouldn't be necessary to divulge the winner's name to do that.

What would the single ticket holder sue the multi ticket holder for? Playing too many tickets?

If I were the one holding the single ticket, no way I'd waste my money even exploring a law suit. I'd be disappointed, but I know the rules of the game I'm playing and I know it's perfectly legal to buy multiple tickets with the same numbers. That's how the cookie crumbles.

I've put money in a machine intending to fr quick picks for draw games or insert play slips plenty of times only to be forced to get scratchers.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

For some reason I see too many red flags in this story to take it serious.

But instead of pressing one of QP or scratch-off buttons you put more money into the machine?

"So, I insert the same play slip 3 more times until I was out of credits." ------------- "I was super pissed that I had 5 of the same plays."

Did you really expect to get different combos using the same play slip?

And the those self serve machines have buttons to get QPs making using the QP option on a play slip unnecessary.

You get 83% of the jackpot and they get the other 17%. A few years ago an Ohio Buckeye 5 player purchase 52 tickets with the same five numbers, hit and thought he won $5.2 million but the game had an aggregate $1 payoff. He sued and the store that sold him the tickets and won, but I doubt anybody can win a lawsuit claiming you ran your play slip more than you intended.

The real problem with your story started when you said "I usually test the machine to see if it will take a play slip because of problems in the past with lotto machines." Seriously, if you had "problems in the past" why didn't you just simply hand them to the store clerk in the first place?

The good news is you built a nice straw man.

What grounds would the other person sue over? There were 6 winning tickets sold. The jackpot gets split 6 ways. If 6 people had the same number it wouldn't matter. So what, if you had it 5 times. Would you sue him if it was the other way around?

If it bothers you that much, you could always give away 4 of your tickets.

List Pick 3 singles by low sums, high sums. Separate each sum row by consecutive pair and non consecutive pair combos. These 3 pair groups. 14 17 47, 25 28 58, 36 39 69 are in 63 combos. 54 combos do not have them. Which sums do the 3 pair groups appear and not appear? Look at root sum groups 147, 258, 369. Play accordingly.

Two things: One, if you ever end up playing at a Ohio vending machine again think about downloading the Ohio lottery app and use their eplay slip feature. You hold it under the red light, it beeps, you put it under again to confirm (it beeps again) and it prints the tickets. No muss, fuss, no paper eating. I have been where you are at with those machines on the turnpike and the eplay slips have reduced my stress level significantly.

Two, If you legitimately bought the tickets with the same number those tickets are all in play. People do it all the time. I know I have seen several articles right here in the news on LP. I might be a little bummed if I held the other ticket but I would never dream of suing you.

They do but only if you want a $2 quick pick. I was visiting Ohio on Friday and stopped to pick up an extra ticket for Friday night. I could do a quick pick without the megaplyer on the machine I was using but to add the megaplyer I needed to use a play slip. It makes no sense at all, in my opinion, but the machine was primarily a scratch off vending machine so maybe that is why. I also couldn’t have added advanced draws without the playslip if I had wanted to.

Probably the most annoying thing, though, was that if I had wanted to use my debit card I couldn’t just buy the stupid tickets. I had to put a set amount on the machine, starting at $10, and then use it up. So if I wanted to buy three $3 tickets I would have had to spend the extra dollar on something I didn’t really want. Luckily I had the exact cash and didn’t need to mess with it.

Sounds like the Ohio vending machines are even more high tech than the ones I've used. I know of one place were I can use a debit/credit card to lottery tickets and all the KY vending machines are cash only.

I'm thinking all the stuff about a vending machine "forcing" them in to playing the same set of numbers over and over again was to start a discussion about frivolous lawsuits. That being said, I thought the "Ohio is an anonymous state" was a nice touch.

I did some research on the guy who sued the Ohio Lottery after he bought 52 Buckeye 5 tickets all with the same five numbers and even though he lost that one, he successfully sued the store owner where he bought his tickets and got about $2 million. not exactly the $5.2 million he thought he won. The lottery gave him a check for $981,132.

BTW, another player matched five numbers in that drawing too and even thought their cut was about $19,000, the Ohio Lottery gave them a check for $100,000.

Sounds like you should stay far away from all mechanical devices.
