  This is something I do to come up with a pick 4 number to play. First get the digits of the current date in MMDD format. Ex: Dec 18 is 1218. Then get the digits of the previous winning number. Ex: 3955. Then add the two numbers together one digit at a time using modular arithmetic base 10. 

  Ex: 1+3=4, 2+9=1, 1+5=6, 8+5=3

  Now join them together as 4163 and that's your number.

  It's a perfectly good method of coming up with a P4 number to play, no better or worse than any of the thousands methods posted on this forum, and certainly up to par with anything created by users who have achieved "sacred cow" status. Please ignore the knuckleheads harassing you. They don't have the balls to criticize the sacred cows and their equally arbitrary systems. (Many cults have formed around certain users and systems around here. It is truly ridiculous. )

  Your method reminds me of the obnoxious lottery pool at the office. After a run of bad luck with jackpot games they switched to Pick 4. They came around during breaks panhandling for contributions and numbers as usual. I declined as usual, but the guy I was sitting with in the break room pitched in a dollar and gave the numbers for the current date. Lottery pool guy said no, someone already said that number you have to pick a different number. So the guy I was sitting with, without looking up from what he was doing, said ok then use the numbers on the clock behind me (it was a big digital clock so you couldn't misread it.) Lottery pool guy took the number and the money and left. The next day the winning number was one minute off from what the clock had read at that moment.
