  Even if it was just a coincidence, having the lottery drawings conducted via computer means you can never be sure.  Even the staff cannot know for sure, because they just press a button and out come the numbers. 

  Nobody can see a computer program execute.  But they can see balls tumbling in a machine and being drawn.

  Not only you cannot be sure of its authenticity, but the randomness of an RNG is highly doubted, specially in stateless systems where external factors are called on purpose, i.e. blockchain smart contracts. That's why most of the online lotteries cannot be trusted and are labeled fraudulent. Though some lotteries like My Lotto Coin tried to overcome this issue by mixing the old and new together, where winning numbers are captured from external sources and pushed to smart contracts. Seems there is still no hope for digital to be truly random.

  We as players do not have any knowledge of the type of RNG program being used to select the numbers.  I have to believe that in this day an age, casinos and lotteries have to be studying the psychology of gambling and players habits and no telling what kind of code can be included in an RNG program. Delaware lottery has control of the 3 gambling casinos in the state and is supposed to assure that each machine pays out a minimum of 87% and a maximum of 95% in theory and is allowed to control the computer program in each machine from a master computer. I questioned them about this once while at the lottery office, and was told "they were just checking the amount of money in the machine". The machine moves from winning plays to losing plays gradually playing the player down until my $20 is gone in my case. They also set up machines in heavily travelled areas to win more often to temp the new arrivals to begin playing. Who knows what they may be doing to the RNG lottery programs. Many might believe that these programs are designed to only make us losers, but they may be designed to actually allow many to win at times. For example when popular numbers like triples come out. There are a lot of winners and the lottery takes a big hit (not so big in Delaware as they have a $400,000 loss cut off on numbers), but most players turn around and give that money back and most likely more bets than usual, increasing the state's cut. In Delaware the RNG Keno game controls the bets made each game to prevent players from winning in a random drawing way. That program is just like a slot machine program designed to guarantee a specific take for the state each year. And it is so obvious when they surround the numbers one has picked with close numbers and give one just the amount of numbers that prevents even a $1 win. This is particularly obvious early in the day when not many people are playing. The same program is being used in many states.

  I read an article a couple years ago about how the casinos had figured out how to get around those minimum payout requirements. It used to be on certain slot machines, if you sat and played one long enough, you could figure out the payout patterns. For example, if it's paying on every eighteenth play, you could time your bets so you played small for 17 in a row and then bump it way up when the machine was ready to pay out. Clever players could walk away with big money doing this. So what the casinos did to get around it was figure a way to put multiple machines in a pool, so the group is now paying out on the eighteenth play, but there's so many machines in the pool, you could never be sure which one was going to pay out.

  One of the stories I heard about that guy who shot up Vegas a couple years ago was that he'd been making big money on the slot machines by counting payouts and when they switched over to pools, he lost his golden goose and decided to take revenge on Vegas because of it.

  I recall that more than once that the IGT RNG 20/80 Keno games actually were short one number in las Vegas

  At one time, I used to not be so fond of RNG machines. Well, I've changed my opinion. I'd rather have all games play through the decay, than through those darn ping-pong ball things.

  All Random Number Generators (RNG) are not the same.

  I think the people who have the greatest insight like the hired lottery scientist, the lottery owners, and the state officials that regulate the lotteries, know the factors that lead to states going from using Mechanical Random Number Generators (MRNG) to Computer Random Number Generators (CRNG). I'm sure someone figured out that when comparing the number of tickets bought per state compared to the number of tickets won per state, there is a significant difference in the profits of CRNG states and MRNG states.

   

  I feel the reality is that MRNG lotteries are able to be predicted more often when compared to CRNG states. I can't remember the lottery post article about how it's legal for CRNG states to basically manipulate the outcome of the drawings but just knowing that this is legal is disturbing.

   

  We have to follow the money and see what drives the decision-making of the people who stand to benefit the most. These are the people who are influencing more states to switch from MRNG's to CRNG's.

   

  I've said it before all state lotteries should be required to use MRNG and broadcast their drawings live offline and online so as many people as possible can see balls flying around in some machine as the winning numbers are drawn.

  No, not exciting at all. Never wanted to watch that. In the seventies during the previous century and millennium I had to watch the drawing to note the winning numbers on a beer carton. When I started to play myself, I never watched the drawings as I always worked at 8 PM and had no interest watching. I only looked at the results in the window of the newspaper shop. Later I read the results online or downloaded them.

  You can watch two snails racing on salad leaves in nature, that's more fun!

  I can't speak to any game except Pick 3 - style games, but my software is specifically designed to tease out patterns in the two-draw-a-day Pick 3 lotteries. 

  Recently, I noticed something a little "funny" in one state that drew my attention. I'd been waiting for an occasion like this to peek at the list of lotteries which draw computerized draws vs states which make true draws. I was trying to be utterly objective so I had purposefully avoided looking at the list. But this incident struck me as the right time to take a look a look at the list here on the Lottery Post site. So I called up the list and... the state where I thought I had found something "funny" does NOT use computerized draws. The joke was on me. LOL!

  Seriously, crazy coincidences do happen.

  P.S. I agree with Todd's argument about why we shouldn't trust computers to generate truly random numbers. They would need to use a device based on atomic decay or some other random physical process before I would accept that they are "random."

  P.P.S. I got the shock of my life when I scanned down that list of true draw vs computerized draw states and learned that Pennsylvania draws a computerized Pick 3 draw in their Day draw and true draw in their Evening draw. WTF?!? Now I feel kinda funny every time I run my programs on the PA data.
