I've been playing about 40 years now. Started out in Ohio when there was one jackpot game, a lotto game. Can't remember much but I think it was a 6/40 game, jackpot was maybe $250,000. I came "close". Once got 5 out 6 for about $800.
Here in Texas our lotto game is 6/54. Much tougher odds. Again, came close several years ago. Played 2 lines, 12 different numbers. Got 4 correct on first line, 2 correct on second line. Won about $50, jackpot was worth about $4 million.
Bottom line is this. The odds are and always have been against the players. "Close" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, because in jackpot games secondary prizes will not compensate for the cost of playing over time (years). Except MM and PB should you win second prize ($1 million).
I play for fun, but like most people I dream of winning. Otherwise, why play.
A little side story. I work part time at a c-store/gas station in a grocery store parking lot. The grocery store Director pops in once in a while to buy smokes and lottery tix. Nice guy. I asked him if he would quit his job if he won (he works 6 days a week). He laughed and said he would be out of there in an effing minute.
Everyone who plays dreams, most understand the odds.
