There are a lot of types of seizures. Most people think of the notorious 'grand mal', during which someone drops to the floor and jerks around. If you're lucky, you have heard of or witnessed other types.
The type of seizure I had this day was a rare (for me anyway) focal aware seizure. They used to call them simple partial seizures. I am completely conscious, alert, aware, can converse with you, and remember everything. I remember that day as if it was yesterday, and it still freaks me out. When I have them, and they are rare for me, especially the prolonged ones, colors look warmer, and everything looks more crisp. I had one a couple of weeks ago, too, first prolonged one in a while.
There are other types of focal aware/simple partial seizures (auras, they're called), some of which aren't so pleasant and often precede a focal unaware/complex partial seizure, the type that caused a car wreck and landed me an epilepsy diagnosis. Basically, the seizure that began in that small area spreads throughout the entire brain. I often get a bitter metallic taste in my mouth with that one, feel lightheaded, and then 'zone'. If you're yelling in my ear to stop the car, that we're about to crash, I might not hear you, and if I do, you sound far away and your words aren't registering. I may not even know we crashed. When you tell me, and take me to look at my car in a ditch, that too won't phase me. In the ambulance, I might not remember most of the ride, except the part during which I'm coming out of the seizure, look up, and a paramedic's face is 6 inches above mine so that he can tell ER doctors that my eyes rolled back into my head, up and to the right. Lol
One other type of aura I get, a new one for me, is what I call a freeze aura. I suddenly stop dead in my tracks, freeze up, know something is 'off' and about to happen. I'm not dizzy. I'm not scared. I'm merely focused, almost as if my brain is telling me I need to make a decision, and fast, because I'm about to zone into a complex partial/focal unaware seizure. I had this happen back in August and almost rolled head-first down half a flight of stairs.
If I've confused everybody...
Aura = focal aware/simple partial = limited to one small area of the brain, but can morph into a focal unaware/complex partial (loss of awareness). Grand mals are included in the latter category, but I've never had one of those. Any time you lose awareness, you are having a full-brain seizure.
