I asked the search engine about NC digital instant games and what money they take in vs what money they pay out. I asked the question b/c the games seem to just take your money and never give you anything substantial. Below is the response, but I am having trouble believing that they pay out 87% of proceeds. Nonetheless, I do believe the part that says that even though they are taking in more $$ with these games, that they are contributing less to the education system than they did before the digital instants became a thing. I'd rather play a free lottery game and get nothing then give my money to NC. Who chooses these games? We are not allowed to play online games elsewhere for $$ without breaking someone's law, so we are stuck playing these legal games that are --in my opinion-- unexciting and pure ripoffs. Anyway, below is the result of the inquiry.--
In fiscal year (FY) 2025 (July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025), North Carolina's digital instant games generated
$2.6 billion in gross sales. A significant portion of this amount was paid out in prizes, leading to a lower net return to education compared to traditional games.
Revenue and Payout Details for NC Digital Games in FY 2025
- Gross Sales (Money Pulled In): Digital instant games accounted for approximately $2.6 billion in sales during their first full fiscal year of operation. This represents nearly 40% of the NC Education Lottery's total sales of $6.6 billion in FY 2025.
- Payouts (Prizes Paid Out): Digital instant games have a much higher prize payout rate than traditional lottery games, which contributed to a lower overall profit margin for the lottery.
- While specific total payout numbers for only digital games were not itemized in the search results, one report indicated that the general budget for digital games projected an 87% payout rate in prizes.
- Overall, for all lottery games, the share of money paid out to players increased from 66% in FY 2023 to 76% in FY 2025, largely due to the shift to higher-payout digital instant games.
- Net Proceeds for Education: Despite the massive increase in gross sales from digital games, the net amount transferred to the state's Education Fund slightly decreased from $1.07 billion in FY 2024 to $1.05 billion in FY 2025. This is because the high payout structure of digital games leaves less "margin" for education funding.
The financial performance of these games has prompted the State Auditor's office to launch a performance audit of the NC Education Lottery, the first in over a decade, to investigate why education contributions have dropped as a percentage of total sales-----------------
So, has anyone had good experiences with these digital instant games in NC? Won anything big? Let me know cause maybe I am just playing the wrong instants.
