on another thread a poster said something that sounded like he believes he can send a lawyer to claim a jackpot for him without even the lottery finding out who he is. this poster seems to live in a state that allows winners to remain anonymous from the public, but i don't think a jackpot winner can hide their identity from the the lottery.

i could be wrong though. what do you think?

I believe the lottery offices still have to verify who purchased the ticket and for tax purposes. It seems like it would be against public safety to do so otherwise. A random person could steal a ticket from a friend or family member and claim it is their ticket. All lotteries have verification protocols.

True but the litigation risk from not engaging in any sort of verification process is alarmingly high. Gives me a headache just thinking about it and I am not even lottery legal staff.

I would be surprised if any lottery claimed not to do winner verifications ---on the record vs off the record.

And to point out another incorrect and ridiculous statement by him and he makes sooo many--"I'd 1st make sure they're not a member of dat VooDoo Bar Association.."---

Any attorney you choose MUST be a member in active good standing of a state bar association and that info can be verified online.

It's my understanding that in my state if you win a larger prize the lottery commission is required to check to see if you owe back taxes, child support, have some other court ordered payment, or have benefited from certain government programs that require paying back under some circumstances.

You "suppose"? Even if the answer is in great big letters at the top of the lottery's home page how could winning a major prize and using the claim to verify the rules not be the best way?

IIRC early articles about it made it sound like the last minute claim was the major reason the lottery anted to know who was behind the legal entity trying to claim the prize, but I can't imagine the lottery not wanting an actual person to be identified. Aside from the various things that might result in some of the money being held back for various debts, I'd think they'd also want to make sure a winner isn't trying to cheat a spouse out of their share.

The legal entity used to claim the prize will have a taxpayer identification number, so I'm not sure the lotteries need to be concerned with the tax liabilities if any individual people. They obviously need to withhold the required amount, but that should satisfy their legal obligations. The IRS and state tax departments will obviously want to know the tax obligations of the claiming entity and any disbursements to individuals.

Another good reason. If Tipton had sent somebody else to buy the ticket the whole scheme might never have unraveled or may have taken far longer.
