  this question was inspired by the recent news article about an illegal immigrant single mother who won more than a million dollars but sent her legal immigrant uncle to claim it for her, and then the uncle took the money for himself.

  some posters suggested it would have been wiser to claim it herself and use the money to hire a really good immigration lawyer, or that it would be better to be deported but have a million dollars anyway. some said you shouldn't play in the first place so you don't end up in a situation like this. cases like this also make you wonder how many times illegal immigrants have much smaller amounts stolen after sending a relative to claim, but don't bother to press charges because the amount stolen isn't enough to justify deportation risk.
