In Brazil's lotteries, this is what happens:
Important – redemption period: prizes expire 90 days after the date of the draw.
After this period, the funds are transferred to the National Treasury to be allocated to FIES (Higher Education Student Financing Fund).

California has millions of dollars in unclaimed lottery prizes each year, including Powerball, Mega Millions, SuperLotto Plus, and Scratchers tickets, with specific deadlines and claim procedures.
Overview of Unclaimed Prizes
California Lottery officials report that $40–50 million in prizes go unclaimed annually across all games, including Scratchers, Powerball, Mega Millions, and SuperLotto Plus. Unclaimed prizes occur when winners lose their tickets, fail to check them, or are unaware of their winnings. These funds are eventually redirected to California public schools, supporting education from elementary to college-level institutions.
Claim Deadlines
- Powerball and Mega Millions: Winners have up to one year from the draw date to claim prizes.
- SuperLotto Plus: Winners must claim prizes within 180 days (about six months) from the draw date..
- Secondary prizes (e.g., matching five numbers) also follow the six-month deadline.
How to Claim Prizes
- Prizes $600–$1,000: Can be claimed immediately at one of the nine California Lottery district offices after verification.
- Prizes over $1,000: Must be claimed by mail or in person at a district office using a claim form.
- Processing time: Winners typically receive a check in seven to nine weeks after the claim is processed.
- Ticket verification: California Lottery retail outlets and the mobile app allow players to scan tickets instantly to check for winnings.
Unclaimed Powerball Prizes
A detailed list of unclaimed Powerball prizes by state and location is available on the official Powerball website, showing prize amounts, ticket purchase locations, and remaining claim days Powerball. California is included in this list, and prizes are updated regularly.
Additional Resources
- California Lottery website: Provides winning numbers, claim forms, and office locations.
You'd think they'd put the money into the prize pool seeing as how you're paying to play and the schools only contribute a sorry lack of lottery education and otherwise. Do the schools even have a poster about your lottery dollars at work, I doubt it.

It depends on the state and/or game.
In some cases unclaimed winnings result in a ledger entry saying the money went to whatever cause that state supports with lottery proceeds, but AFAIK no state comes up with a budget that lists how much will go to that cause and then augments it with lottery proceeds. What typically happens is that lottery proceeds are used to fund the budget allotment without taking all of the allotted money from the general fund.
In some cases unclaimed winnings are recycled into different prizes so that while the original winner loses out the winnings end up in other players' hands'.

I wonder if people would intentionally not claim the money ,
so that the money goes straight to the schools

For California specifically, the Lottery's own claim page fills in the Scratchers piece that's missing above: a Scratchers ticket has to be postmarked or received by Lottery offices within 180 days of the game's announced end-of-game date. That's 180 days from when the game officially ends, not from when you bought or scratched the ticket. Draw games are 180 days from the draw date, except Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots, which get one year.
On where it goes: CA Lottery press releases say an expired prize goes to California public schools "as required by statute," and they put the running total at more than $1.1 billion in unclaimed prizes since 1985.
Tone43, on doing it on purpose: I'd guess that's rare. Schools already get their cut from every ticket sold (the Lottery reports more than $1.9 billion for education in fiscal 2024-25), so an unclaimed prize is extra on top of that, spread statewide. Someone who wants the money to help schools could also claim it and give it straight to a school or district they choose.
Other states do handle it differently, like KY Floyd said, so check your own state's rules. One habit worth having in CA: the End of Game Info tab on the Lottery's Scratchers page lists the last day to claim for each ended game.

Excellent information on the scratchers. I don't think a lot of people know about that

as far as someone not claiming their money from a jackpot intentionally so that the money goes to the school may be a rarity, but there's always that chance

if the unclaimed money does go to the schools
does it go to all the schools
or schools in more affluent areas
or schools in poverty areas

"does it go to all the schools "
I've got no idea how the different states do their budgeting, but I'm still willing to assume that lottery proceeds that benefit education go to different schools in the same proportion as the state funding that didn't come from the lottery. If a particular school district gets 1% of the non-lottery funding I'd expect them to get 1% of the lottery funding. Of course the non-lottery funding probably isn't just an equitable distribution based strictly on the number of students. The local funding is certainly going to vary and affluence, in the form of property values/taxes, is going to be a factor in all the things funded by local taxes. I'd imagine Google could scare up actual amounts, although it may not give you a direct answer to specific question sch as per-student funding in a particular district.
FWIW, my memory of the details are extremely vague, but many years ago I saw a story about how one person's lottery winnings screwed up school funding.
[remembers just enough for Google to figure it out and offer an AI summary, then a link to the article here at LP] "In 2011, a Green Island resident won a $28.7 million share of a $319 million Mega Millions jackpot. Because New York State calculates public school aid based on a formula factoring in a community’s combined property value and total gross income (the "wealth index"), the single lottery windfall drastically distorted the data. I personally always thought that a six month window was way too short and a two year window would be more ideal. I have found tickets I forgot about two years later. I have found tickets I forgot about one year later. I found a ticket that was one year old and it was a winning ticket but for a free ticket but since it was expired by a year I wasn't able to claim it. I would love to see a two year expiration date for lottery tickets.

if the money was spread out evenly throughout all the schools. I still don't think it would be enough money to make a difference

I know I'm gonna get backlash on the statement. I'm just about to make
but what if the schools in affluent areas who are already taken care of by just the fact that the parents can afford to educate their children
what if the schools in affluent areas were to donate the proceeds of the lottery to schools in poverty areas
