  While I am very critical of the NY Lottery forcing some big winners to receive annuity payments, they will be doing something very positive: trying a five day promotion with the still-popular 5/39 TAKE FIVE game.

  From Monday 5/5 until Friday 5/9, the NY Lottery will be drawing an EXTRA Take Five number, after the five regular numbers are drawn.

  There will be EIGHT prize levels, the four additional prizes will be 4+B, 3+B, 2+B, and 1+B. Three of the four extra levels will be funded by unclaimed prize money, while the 1+B prize will be a FREE PLAY (which the 2/5 prize always has been.) Finally, if nobody matches 4+B, that money is added to the 3+B pool (if no 5/5 winner, first prize is added to the 4/5 pool as usual).

        Have you checked out the "$1,000,000 Megathrow sweepstakes" NY is running till the 30 of May? You have to send in a losing Mega Million ticket with a special form which you can download or get at your sellers location to be eligible. Looks like some of the stuff they do in California.

  The contest also doesn't seem very fair - it requires some good athletic ability to win, since the contestants have to compete.  I would think that the NY Lottery would pick something that was a little more like a "lottery" and less like a competition.

  I _always_ read the fine print for anything that has to do with lotteries.

  I also agree with you about the "skill"...lotteries are supposed to be based on PURE LUCK.

  Canadians (including those who read our messages) have to deal with "skill testing questions" to win contests (not lotteries), which almost always consist of multi-part math problems.

        Don't they sometimes have this sort of stuff in California? I seem to recall their having basketball shooting to win a million bucks as a lottery promotion/gimmick.

  I don't know about CA, but, some not-so-lucky entrant from upstate sank a half-court shot in November and "won" the same stupid annuity that is part of the Mega Throw-Up.

  Could the NY attorney general investigate the "questionable" practices of the NY Lottery? It may not be illegal, but I certainly think it's UNETHICAL (of course, you can argue that playing the lottery is unethical as well.)

  I bet our AG will be running for governor in 2006.
