emilyg... here's what I have figured for pick 3, I still need to mod it for pick 4...
(Thanks to ERAE for the help & inspiration, formula sharing is cool! hope you like my mods)

Assumes S2 contains the first result of your workdown
Assumes D3, E3 and F3 contain the next day's results by digit drawn (separated into 3 columns), therefore D3 is 1st, E3 is 2nd and F3 is 3rd.
place this formula into cell AC3 (IF S2 thru AB2 contain 10 workout steps), then just autofill to AL3... box hits are clearly indicated with a B, straights with an S and misses with blank space.
at the bottom of the list, simply use
=countif(AC2:AC<end of your list>,"=S")
then drag this across the bottom of each of the 10 columns, not only counts straight hits but also shows clustering!
and below that, add
=countif(AC2:AC<end of your list>,"=B")
this counts the boxes (autofill this 10 over too)
then simply SUM each of the countif rows to get a total number of boxes and straights for ANY system, provided you list the rundown results...

I tried your system in chicago today on yesterday midday and feel real close; 5877.1231,=6008,7239.8460.9691.0822.1053.2284,3415,4646 5877results 6840 hit , THANKS for sharing this

this should do the trick for checking straight and boxes for pick 4... again it is ONLY for backtesting, assumes columns D E F and G contain drawn digits 1 thru 4... if number was 6518...
this checks for 1 straight hit and the 23 possible box combinations that remain AFTER the straight hit (24 combos total)

Also assumes your workout numbers start in column S...
I will test this out with 1111 and 1231 over the holidays on the PA data I have...

now that we can backtest, maybe we can develop some sort of "Rundown Calendar" using an overlay of the hits of certain rundowns, sort of like an entire system "skip/hit" chart?
maybe 1111 and 1231 have certain on-again off-again intervals that can be interlaced?
the sky is the limit, right?

I redid the sheet, leaving one cell that I can plug any number into and automatically perform the rundowns and count straight and box hits, I fixed one or two errors with the formula and I apologize to anyone who tried to copy the formula and was greeted with the "formula is too large" error. The trick is to break it down into four subsections... the first will check for straight and 5 box combos, and the other 3 each check for 6 box combos. A simple countif at the end for S's and B's will tell the tale easily, and a single column check for the same will give the distribution...
First 10 columns AFTER the rundown (enter in 1st and autofill)

all assume V starts your rundown, that you are using 10 rundown steps and that the individual fraw numbers are in columns D thru G...

As it stands (with new formula corrections)...
in 6,635 draws...
Adding 1111 = 6 straight hits and 22 box hits
adding 1231 = 8 straight hits and 32 box hits
nothing recently for either...
other numbers of possible interest....
Adding 2222 = 7 straight hits and 41 box hits
Adding 3333 = 8 straight hits and 27 box hits
Adding 4444 = 8 straight hits and 36 box hits
Adding 5555 = 6 straight hits and 29 box hits
Adding 6666 = 10 straight hits and 38 box hits
Adding 7777 = 11 straight hits and 36 box hits
Adding 8888 = 11 straight hits and 27 box hits
Adding 9999 = 7 straight hits and 24 box hits
Again, sorry for any inconvenience... it works now though... Since the file is now MASSIVE, it would be probably easier for me to plug in a number (like 1111 or 1231) and give back results than to e-mail the entire sheet (36 Megs uncompressed, COMPRESSED size is getting over 5 megs!)
