Anyone who wins in Indiana......
Sorry. When someone wins in the Hoosier Lottery daily....
I'm sorry; I just can't say that with a straight face.
Theoretically, when someone wins with a Pick-3 or Pick-4 ticket in a state that lies between Michigan and Kentucky, and is bordered laterally by Illinois and Ohio, that player can cash his/ her ticket at any lottery retailer if two conditions are met:
1). The value of the ticket is less than $600.00
2). The lottery retailer is willing to admit he has that much cash on the premises.
So, if you hit a Pick-3 straight, or even a Pick-4 box (it could happen, I suppose), you can cash your ticket without worrying about the tax man. However, if you have say, 17 winning Pick-4 box tickets for one draw, you can cash those in all over the place, one or two at a time. In a case like this, you still don't have to worry about the tax man; at least not yet. All you have to worry about for the next seven years is pi%*ing off your brother-in-law or some other member of your family who will gleefully drop a dime to the IRS and share their knowledge of your good fortune.
This is the bad part, and it's not as much fun as discovering you're a winner or cashing the tickets.
I get free calendars from my bank every year, and I always grab an extra one to keep track of what I spend and what I win on a daily basis. I know for a fact that the IRS will accept this method as an accounting of your winnings and losses for the year. Don't throw away your losing tickets, though, just in case you're audited; those tickets are your receipts. The same holds true for your winning pay slips; don't throw them away.
Good luck...
Jim
