Dragon
I'm very suspicious of people that call themself Guru. The word conjures up images of India and two immediately spring to mind. The first is the simple few words I read as a boy from Mahatmur Gandi and never forgot:
"Prayer is the fewness of words and the abundance of deeds."
The second is one of the most amazing TV programs I have ever seen. It was about one of there wise men who as his road to enlightement rolled 3,000 miles down the middle of the roads around India. Anyway, I digress.
I'm sure there is more than one way of approaching this but I'll set the ball rolling. (I'm adding a bit more detail than what you probably need for the benefit of anyone else reading.)
A full wheel of 6 from 12 numbers for a 6/49 Lotto is simply the number of combinations of 6 from the 12 numbers you have chosen - so 12c6 = 924. These are the tickets you're playing.
The number of combinations with 5 winning numbers is 49c6/6c5x43c1 = 13,983,816/258 = 54,200.83. (If you're wondering where the 43 comes from it is the complement to your winning 6 and you have to take 1 number from it. (An interesting aside is that the probability of getting a 6 combination right in a 6/49 Lotto is the same as getting a 43 combination right.)
So the way I see it just as your chance of getting a five with 1 ticket is
1 in 54,201 your chances with 924 tickets is 1 in 59. Lot of tickets to play for maybe 1 five a year.
