The Mass Millions game began in 1987 as a 6/46. It was changed to a 6/49 four years later. The only modification to it since was shifting the draw nights.
Whether there should have been a Mass Millions to begin with is debatable (rather than changing Megabucks, which was a 6/36 and is now a 6/42.) Massachusetts, if it wanted to keep Mass Millions around this long, should have included a cash option, or perhaps replace both Megabucks and Mass Millions with a single jackpot game.
There is speculation that the new game, Cash WinFall, will be played like the Pennsylvania Match-6 game, since it will be $2 per play with overall odds of 1-in-6. If so, players may find the all-cash jackpot the only real reason to play it.
IMO Mass should be retiring BOTH Megabucks AND Mass Millions (instead of just the 6/49) and replace them with a 6/45 game featuring a $3 prize for matching three numbers, and a 25-year annuity jackpot with a CASH OPTION. Furthermore, Mass Cash 5/35 should be expanded to at least four nights a week, since many pick-5 games are drawn daily.
