Todd,
I've always wondered why lotteries make some of the scratch-offs too complicated for many people to understand how to play or to recognize a winning ticket. I'm not much of a scratch-off player, but there are certain scratch-offs in my state that I will not play because they are far too much trouble to the point of being annoying to play. I think a simple win/lose scratch-off would be a good idea for a basic ticket, but I also know people who truly enjoy the more complicated varieties of scratch-offs. Those people seem to enjoy the entertainment aspect off all those different tickets, but I just want know if I've won any money when I play a scratch-off. In any case, I think all scratch-off tickets should clearly indicate somewhere on the ticket if it is a winner or loser. There's no good reason that any player should be misled or left in doubt about that.

i do like the idea, but more prize levels are needed, and all one dollar scratch tickets have the same dimensions for some reason.
what do you think of my idea?

The problem with a rolling multi-state jackpot scratch ticket (as I see it) is that scratch tickets have a fixed number of prizes that are pre-determined, so there will definitely be "x" number of winners, so there's really no rollover potential.

Couldn't a game be offered where every ticket is a potential winner? Out of 40 spaces, for example, only three spaces could be revealed to win a prize. If more spaces than that were revealed, the ticket would automatically become invalid. There could be numerous secondary prizes offered, but only one potential jackpot prize per series. At the end of the series (which could run for thirty days), if nobody had won the jackpot prize, then it would roll over to the next ticket series until the jackpot was dventually won. Then the jackpot would start over at its beginning level.

Well, my point to the above simple scratch game is that it eliminates any possible confusion or lawsuit. I can imagine in your scratch game idea that someone could say they accidentally scratched two of the blocks, so they should really win. My idea does not have that flaw.
I don't think every ticket should have a winner on it, although every ticket certainly has the "chance" to be a winner.

well..I think they should have more basic intants like you said. some people do enjoy the game aspect, so keep some for them..but most play to win instantly!

I agree. I think the lotteries should keep all those "complicated" games for those people who enjoy those things. My simple scratch game idea would be for those who want to play an instant game without all the frills (and complications).
Maybe one of the better lotteries out there, like New Mexico, Nebraska, or South Carolina (to name a few), would take the idea and give it a try. If it catches on, maybe the idea could spread.
Again, the idea is to create a basic scratch game that appeals to everyday lottery players who don't want to wade through all the stuff to get to the good or bad news. It would be a foundational game, like Pick 3, that most states would offer.

I like the idea you have mentioned.
The state lotteries love the confusion of scratchers so they have more money going unclaimed.

soe people play scratch-offs to waste time, hence the bingo, crossword, wheel of fortune, keno, etc. games.

I've seen people buy 20 scratch-off tickets and never bother to check any of them, but ask a clerk to scan them for winners. I think the lotteries offer all those worthless game instructions to give the loser a feeling of some control before learning he has won nothing. Think about it, when the published odds of winning something is 1:5 and many of the prizes are a free ticket with the same odds of winning, then the odds of actually winning some real money are much higher and spending $10 or $20 for tickets and knowing you've won nothing immediately could reduce interest in the games. When a top prize of a half million dollars or more is offered then a lot of worthless tickets got to be sold for the states to make any profit.

RJOh: That's true for any lottery game. Is your point that with scratch games you just know sooner?
I think people ask the clerk to check for winners because the games are so complex, and they're afraid that they'll miss a winner. I know I feel that way sometimes.
There are no scratch games built for players who want an instant answer without all the nonsense.
