FIU Football player stabbed to death on campus

Berry stabbed to death on FIU campus

Associated Press

Only hours after FIU running back Kendall Berry was stabbed to death on the school's Miami campus, the university president said in a video message that officials "will not rest" until his attacker is found.

"Our hearts are heavy," a somber FIU president Mark B. Rosenberg said Friday morning.

Berry was stabbed late Thursday night, after Miami-Dade police said the 22-year-old junior from Haines City, Fla., was involved in an argument with another man outside the front doors of the school's student recreation center -- one of the spots where the football team trains. Several witnesses to the incident were being interviewed, Miami-Dade Police Detective Javier Baez said.

FIU opened as scheduled Friday morning, with increased security for students and grief counseling available. Students living in residence halls were advised to keep doors locked, and any person at the university could be escorted around campus if desired.

Members of the FIU football team were already receiving counseling, and a football coaching clinic scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been indefinitely postponed.

"Last night, we lost a well-liked student who was a tireless worker in the classroom and on the ball field," Rosenberg said. "Like so many of our students, Kendall Berry had positive energy and a bright future."

Berry died on the way to a hospital, Baez said, adding that he did not know if Berry and his attacker knew each other.

A person was "detained and questioned" but was released and "is not a currently a suspect," Detective Aida Fina-Milian said Friday morning.

Spring football practices have been postponed. No final decision has been made about when to hold the program's annual spring game, which for now remains scheduled for Wednesday.

"In our sorrow, we must come together," Rosenberg said in his message to the university community. "Our campus is safe. Now more than ever, you must tell this story. ... Even while we mourn Kendall and express our sympathy to his family and friends, we must not let this heinous crime overshadow the incredible track record for safety that we have."

Outside the rec center Friday morning, police tape was stuffed into a trash can and an orange "X" was spray-painted on the ground near the front doors. A sign said the building was scheduled to reopen at noon Friday.

Other than the university statement, FIU's athletic department did not have an immediate comment.

Television images showed several students, including some identified as FIU athletes, hugging and crying Thursday night near the spot where the stabbing took place, shortly before the university released official confirmation that Berry died from his injuries. One student dropped to her knees in grief just inside the doorway, screaming.

FIU junior Freddy Chica, 23, said he was working out in the second floor of the rec center Thursday when he noticed people looking outside and a crowd around a fight. He said he saw Berry drop down to the ground and people started running all over.

A man ran out of the rec center, checked for a pulse and started CPR and a woman started to give mouth-to-mouth, but Chica said Berry remained motionless. Chica said he thought Berry was knocked out in the fight and he didn't realize it was a more serious injury until paramedics arrived on the scene.

"When they ripped his shirt off, I noticed that the shirt was full of blood," Chica said Friday.

When paramedics put Berry on the stretcher, his hands fell to the side and his head moved sideways, Chica said.

"I can't get that picture out of my head -- the guy on the stretcher with his head twisted to the side," Chica said.

Berry had 164 all-purpose yards in limited use as a freshman in 2007, appearing in all 12 FIU games that season. He sat out the 2008 season with a knee injury and then had some breakout moments in 2009, rushing for three touchdowns in a span of 13 minutes against Middle Tennessee on Nov. 7 and following that up with two more scores the following week in a win over North Texas.

Berry had seven brothers and sisters, the university said. A memorial service is being scheduled, Rosenberg said.

"Last night, his grief-stricken mother described Kendall as a negotiator, not a fighter," Rosenberg said. "We will not rest until the perpetrator of this crime is brought to justice."

Berry finished last season with a team-best seven touchdowns, despite not playing in the season's first seven games because of continued rehab from the knee injury.

"When you put the football in his hands, that kid can do some unbelievable things," FIU football coach Mario Cristobal said late last season of Berry.

FIU officials said they did not recall another killing on the school's campus.

"It's a very safe campus and we strive every day to keep it that way," said Lt. Rick Torres of the FIU police department.

Alabama Snack Food Heir Killed Himself

Coroner: Alabama snack food heir killed himself

The Associated Press

updated 1:05 p.m. ET, Thurs., March. 25, 2010

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The death of an heir to a well-known Alabama snack food company has been ruled a suicide.

Major Bashinsky's mysterious disappearance March 3 initially raised questions of whether ill will toward the company that makes Golden Flake chips could have played a role. An angry letter about the company and a bag of the chips were found inside his abandoned car.

On Thursday, Chief Deputy Jefferson County Coroner Pat Curry said the 63-year-old lawyer took steps to make it look like he had been abducted and murdered before he killed himself with a gunshot to the head.

The coroner's office said the body, found March 15 in a golf course pond, had rope loosely bound around it, and a label from a Golden Flake bag was in his mouth.

Oh my goodness, Subway's serving breakfast on 4-5-10

Subway to roll out breakfast nationwide April 5 Offering omelet sandwiches is part of strategy to expand customer base

By Ashley M Heher, The Associated Press

CHICAGO - Subway is joining the breakfast scramble and will begin selling the popular and profitable meal early next month.

The new menu is already being served in some cities but will be available at almost all of the sandwich chain's 22,000 U.S. restaurants April 5.

The breakfast menu sticks with Subway's sandwich specialty and will feature a range of omelet sandwiches.

Subway executives say the move is a way for the restaurant chain to win new customers. Many fast-food chains are taking aim at breakfast as they clamor for diners' dollars. Since coffee, eggs and other breakfast ingredients are cheap, the meals can be very profitable if customers like them.

1/3 of Breast Cancer cases avoidable?

One-third of breast cancer may be avoidable

Exercise, diet, alcohol consumption play role in disease, researchers say

By MARIA CHENG, AP Medical Writer

The Associated Press

updated 8:48 a.m. ET, Thurs., March. 25, 2010

BARCELONA, Spain - Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a breast cancer conference said Thursday — comments that could ignite heated discussions among victims and advocates.

While better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed the disease, experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity.

"What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Carlo La Vecchia, head of epidemiology at the University of Milan, told The Associated Press. "It's time to move onto other things."

La Vecchia spoke Thursday on the influence of lifestyle factors at a European breast cancer conference in Barcelona.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In Europe, there were about 421,000 new cases and nearly 90,000 deaths in 2008, the latest available figures. The United States last year saw more than 190,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths. A woman's lifetime chance of getting breast cancer is about one in eight.

Many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced in fat tissue. So experts suspect that the fatter a woman is, the more estrogen she's likely to produce, which could in turn spark breast cancer. Even in slim women, exercise can help reduce the cancer risk by converting more of the body's fat into muscle.

Any discussion of weight and breast cancer is a politically sensitive topic, for some may misconstrue that as the medical establishment blaming victims for getting breast cancer. Victims themselves could also feel guilty, wondering just how much a factor weight played in their getting the disease.

Ian Manley, a spokesman for Breast Cancer Care, a British charity, said his agency has always been very careful about issuing similar lifestyle advice.

"We would never want women to feel responsible for their breast cancer," he said. "It's a complex disease and there are so many factors responsible that it's difficult to blame it on one specific issue."

La Vecchia cited figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimated that 25 to 30 percent of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more.

That means staying slim and never becoming overweight in the first place. Robert Baan, an IARC cancer expert, said it wasn't clear if women who lose weight have a lower cancer risk or if the damage was already done from when they were heavy.

Drinking less alcohol could also help. Experts estimate that having more than a couple of drinks a day can boost a woman's risk of getting breast cancer by four to 10 percent.

Genes vs. lifestyle
After studies several years ago linked hormone replacement therapy to cancer, millions of women abandoned the treatment, leading to a sharp drop in breast cancer rates. Experts said a similar reduction might be seen if women ate better — consuming less fat and more vegetables — and exercised more.

Michelle Holmes, a cancer expert at Harvard University, said changing things like diet and nutrition is arguably easier than tackling other breast cancer risk factors.

"Women who have early pregnancies are protected against breast cancer, but teenage pregnancy is a social disaster so it's not something we want to encourage," she said in a phone interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts. "But there's no downside to reducing obesity and increasing physical activity."

She also said people may mistakenly think their chances of getting cancer are more dependent on their genes than their lifestyle.

"The genes have been there for thousands of years, but if cancer rates are changing in a lifetime, that doesn't have much to do with genes," she said.

In the 1980s and 1990s, breast cancer rates steadily increased, in parallel with the rise in obesity and the use of hormone replacement therapy, which involves estrogen.

La Vecchia said countries like Italy and France — where obesity rates have been stable for the past two decades — show that weight can be controlled at a population level.

"It's hard to lose weight, but it's not impossible," he said. "The potential benefit of preventing cancer is worth it."

Thief takes 56,000 highlighters

Thief takes 56,000 highlighters from Rock Hill truck

By Associated Press

updated 1:15 p.m. ET, Thurs., March. 25, 2010

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Maybe the thief turned green after discovering the haul.

The person or people who broke into a tractor-trailer rig at a South Carolina truck stop certainly had all the necessary supplies.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported someone took 56,000 green highlighters from a tractor-trailer rig at a Rock Hill truck stop Tuesday morning.

Rock Hill police say someone took two pallets full of boxes of BIC green highlighters worth $28,000 from the trailer. The thief also got several boxes of pens.

The driver, Barry Cousar, told officers he had parked his rig at the truck stop Friday.

Cousar says there are no markings on the truck he drives for TXN Logistics of Mount Pleasant to indicate what might be inside.

He says the highlighters were being taken to Charleston to be shipped to Brazil.

Henin beats Craybas to advance

Associated Press

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Justine Henin advanced to the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open by beating Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Henin double-faulted five times Wednesday and struggled with inconsistent groundstrokes. But she saved seven of eight break points while converting five of six.

The 33rd-ranked Henin, a former No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion, is mounting a comeback this year after a 20-month retirement. She'll play fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva in the second round Friday.

"I realize it's gonna take a little bit of time to really be in the good rhythm and find myself again on the court, and I have to get used to different kind of things," Henin said.

"I didn't live this life for almost two years, so that takes a little bit of time," she said.

Henin will face a stiffer second-round test from Dementieva. Henin said she is looking forward to the match to find out where she is with her game.

"Now I'm gonna have a tough round, tough match," Henin said. "That's what I want. So it's gonna be perfect to test myself."

Seeded players had a first-round bye.

James Blake of the United States struggled to oust 18-year-old Serbian wild-card recipient Filip Krajinovic in a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4 first-round win.

After the 2-hour, 13-minute match, Blake joked that "I should be home in bed by now" but credited the teen for keeping him on his toes.

"I'd take that ability at 18 years old over what I was working with at that age," Blake said of Krajinovic.

"I really don't want to give a prediction, but I think, in my opinion, that kid has got some talent," Blake said.

Melanie Oudin closed out the evening with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.

Making her first appearance in Miami since 1996, 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan earned a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Anna Chakvetadze of Russia.

Date Krumm, who retired from the tour in 1996 and started to play again in 2008, spent 2 hours, 32 minutes on the court against Chakvetadze.

Chakvetadze saved two match points she faced while serving at 2-5 in the third set and broke Date Krumm's serve in the next game. The Russian lost the match, dropping her serve at love in the final game.

"In the beginning, everybody said [it was] impossible to come back on the tour," Date Krumm said.

Fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal, who will play on Friday, said a toothache sent him to a dentist and kept him from practicing.

"I had a little bit [of] problem on the teeth, so I didn't practice for a few days," Nadal said. "I started to practice yesterday afternoon. I have an inflammation [of] wisdom tooth. I have to take out all [of them], but not now."

Against Craybas, Henin lost her serve in the second game and sometimes struggled to hold after that. Leading 3-2 in the second set, she fought off four break points before going ahead 4-2.

Serving for the match at 5-2, Henin overcame one break point and needed four match points to close out the victory.

In that final game, Henin missed an overhead shot on the first match point. She followed by netting a forehand drop shot on her second match point. She double-faulted on the third match point before Craybas hit a forehand long on the final match point.

"That happens sometimes," Henin said of missing the overhead. "No excuse about that. It was only a point in the match, so I forgot about that one."

Henin said her comeback will have its up and downs even considering her impressive start to the year. She reached the final of Brisbane before losing to Kim Clijsters and the final of the Australian Open before losing to Serena Williams in January.

"It's not that easy to come back," Henin said. "At the beginning is no pressure; there's nothing.

"I was No. 1 when I retired, and now I have to build again," she said.

Other first-round women's winners on Wednesday were Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, Virginie Razzano of France, Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain and Sara Errani of Italy.

First-round men's winners were Taylor Dent of the U.S., David Nalbandian of Argentina, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, Jeremy Chardy of France and Benjamin Becker and Florian Mayer of Germany.
