Report: Sanchez to have surgery

Report: Sanchez to have surgery

ESPN.com news services

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has decided to undergo surgery on his left knee, according to a report from the New York Daily News.

The Daily News posted on its Web site early Tuesday morning that it has learned Sanchez will have surgery in the next two or three weeks. The paper said it would be performed by the Jets' doctors, led by Ken Montgomery.

The surgery would stabilize the patella ligament in his left knee, which was injured when he was at USC.

Sanchez, who just completed his rookie season, won't need any procedures on the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which he sprained earlier this season.

He had both knees examined by team doctors this week and also was evaluated last week by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said last week Sanchez would be ready "well before training camp" if he elected to have the procedure, which isn't considered major, but might miss the first month of offseason workouts.

Sanchez dislocated the kneecap during the first week of fall practice before his junior season at USC. He has worn a brace on the knee since, even in the pros. Sanchez also banged up his left knee Nov. 29 against the Carolina Panthers.

"You don't want to have anybody miss any time, especially a young quarterback," Tannenbaum said last week, "but we'll balance it out with a medical procedure that may give him more stability in there and give him a chance to play without any worry about that."

Sanchez's right knee, injured against the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 3 in Toronto, will heal through rehabilitation.

"I think everyone's on the same page," Tannenbaum said. "It's not going to be anything major."

Sanchez injured the right knee when he dived headfirst on an 8-yard run early in the third quarter against the Bills. The play came a few days after coach Rex Ryan brought in Yankees manager Joe Girardi to help teach Sanchez how to improve his sliding technique.

He missed one game when Ryan kept him home for the trip to Tampa Bay on Dec. 13 and was replaced by Kellen Clemens. Sanchez returned the following week against the Atlanta Falcons wearing a brace and had no apparent signs of injury during the last several weeks of the season.

He helped lead the Jets to the AFC Championship Game at Indianapolis and played some of his best football during the playoff run. After throwing 20 interceptions during the regular season, Sanchez had just two in three postseason games and fell a win short of becoming the first rookie quarterback to play in the Super Bowl.

The fifth overall pick last year out of USC, Sanchez finished the regular season throwing for 2,444 yards and 12 touchdowns but had a dismal 63.0 quarterback rating.

Armed with a color-coded system and numbered plays on his wrist to help him, Sanchez's ball security improved dramatically down the stretch. He finished the playoffs going 41-of-68 for 539 yards with four touchdowns and a 92.7 rating.

Sanchez also joined the Baltimore Ravens' Joe Flacco as the only rookie quarterbacks to win two playoff games.

Kobe Bryant gets Lakers' scoring mark

Kobe gets Lakers' scoring mark in loss to Memphis

1 hr 29 mins ago

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Kobe Bryant scored 44 points, passing Jerry West as the Los Angeles Lakers' career scorer, but it wasn't enough as the Memphis Grizzlies got 22 points and 17 rebounds from Zach Randolph to defeat the Lakers 95-93 on Monday night.

Rudy Gay led Memphis with 25 points, and his 3-pointer with 29.5 seconds left helped Memphis end its two-game losing streak.

Ron Artest's 3-point attempt from the right side bounced high off the rim as the horn sounded, snapping the Lakers' four-game winning streak.

Bryant passed West's mark on a breakaway dunk in the third quarter. Bryant made 16 of 28 shots, including 4 of 7 outside the arc. Artest added 18 points, while Pau Gasol had 10 points.

Lester Hudson had 13 points for Memphis, and Marc Gasol finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds for Memphis.

While Bryant got the franchise record for scoring, the loss prevented Lakers coach Phil Jackson from passing Pat Riley as the winningest coach in regular-season games for Los Angeles. The two are tied at 533.

The game was tied at 88, when Memphis ran the shot clock to near the end before Randolph made a 22-footer for a 90-88 lead with 1:08 left. His two free throws extended the lead to 92-88. Bryant scored on a drive before Gay's 3-pointer with 29.5 seconds left gave Memphis a 95-90 lead, and the Grizzlies held on.

Memphis got an unexpected offensive boost from Hudson, the rookie shooting guard who was picked up Jan. 8 off waivers from the Celtics.

Hudson had 11 points — his career high — in the second quarter as Memphis extended the lead to 11 before carrying a 52-50 lead into the half as the Lakers outscored Memphis 11-2 to close the half.

Memphis extended the lead to 11 again at the start of the third quarter as the Lakers missed eight of their first nine shots. Meanwhile, Randolph and Gasol were effective inside.

But the Lakers narrowed the deficit again. Bryant's dunk to pass West's mark in the third quarter was part of a stretch where Los Angeles closed the quarter on an 18-6 run.

NOTES: Memphis reserve Sam Young, the Grizzlies' leading scorer off the bench with a 7.5-point average, was inactive because of an allergic reaction. The Lakers wrapped up an eight-game road trip Monday night with a record of 5-3. ... After the pre-game introductions, Pau Gasol, who started his career in Memphis, bumped fists all the way down press row to the Grizzlies bench. ... The teams were tied at 24 at the end of the first because of a mental lapse by Gay, who thought the game clock was running out and fired up a 47-footer with about 5 seconds left. The errant shot bounced hard off the backboard, and the Lakers moved the ball to Bryant, who connected on a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired.

Parietal Eye

Parietal eye

A parietal eye, also known as a parietal organ or third-eye is a part of the epithalamus present in some animal species. The eye may be photoreceptive and is usually associated with the pineal gland, regulating circadian rhythmicity and hormone production for thermoregulation.[1]

Function

The lizard-like reptile tuatara has a "well-developed parietal eye, with small lens and retina".[2][3] Parietal eyes are also found in lizards, frogs and lampreys, as well as some species of fish, such as tuna and pelagic sharks, where it is visible as a light-sensitive spot on top of their head. A poorly developed version, often called the parapineal gland, occurs in salamanders. In birds and mammals the parietal organ (but not the pineal gland) is absent.

Physiology

The parietal eye is a part of the epithalamus, which can be divided into two major parts; the epiphysis (the pineal organ, or pineal gland if mostly endocrine) and the parietal organ (often called the parietal eye, or third eye if it is photoreceptive). It arises as an anterior evagination of the pineal organ or as a separate outgrowth of the roof of the diencephalon. In some species, it protrudes through the skull.[4] The parietal eye uses a different biochemical method of detecting light than rod cells or cone cells in a normal vertebrate eye.[5]
