'This came after many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation,' says Sanford

CHARLESTON, S.C. - South Carolina's first lady, a former Wall Street vice president who helped launch her husband's political career, announced Friday she is filing for divorce months after his tearful public confession of an affair with an Argentine woman.

"This came after many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation, yet I am still dedicated to keeping the process that lies ahead peaceful for our family," Jenny Sanford said in a statement.

A spokesman for her husband, Gov. Mark Sanford, had no immediate comment. The divorce complaint was filed Friday in Charleston County Family Court.

Jenny Sanford's announcement came after a week of wrenching twists in her relationship with the governor. A legislative panel rebuked him for his conduct, he told reporters he still wanted to reconcile with his wife, and she said in a television interview that it was a simple decision to not stand with him as he publicly confessed the affair.

"Certainly his actions hurt me, and they caused consequences for me, but they don't in any way take away my own self-esteem," she told ABC's Barbara Walters. "They reflect poorly on him."

Her divorce complaint did not mention money, property or custody arrangements for the couple's four sons.

"The defendant has engaged in a sexual relationship with a woman other than plaintiff," the complaint reads. "Plaintiff has not condoned that relationship and is informed and believes that she is entitled to a divorce ... from the defendant on the grounds of adultery."

After news of the scandal broke in June, Jenny Sanford said she was willing to reconcile with the two-term Republican governor. She weathered the publication of e-mail exchanges between her husband and his lover and an Associated Press interview in which Sanford called the Argentine woman his "soul mate" and admitted "crossing the line" with other women while he was married.

Jenny Sanford had called her husband's behavior "inexcusable" but said she was willing to give him another chance.

Mark Sanford, 49, disappeared for almost a week in late June to see his Argentine lover, Maria Belen Chapur, leaving his staff, his wife and the rest of the state in the dark about his whereabouts. Initially, his staff told reporters he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Jenny Sanford said she learned about the affair in January when she came across a copy of a letter her husband wrote to Chapur. In the months following, her husband asked several times to visit the other woman, she said.

"It's one thing to forgive adultery; it's another thing to condone it," she told the AP during an exclusive interview two days after Sanford's news conference during which he revealed the affair.

"He was told in no uncertain terms not to see her," she said. "I was hoping he was on the Appalachian Trail. But I was not worried about his safety. I was hoping he was doing some real soul searching somewhere and devastated to find out it was Argentina. It's tragic."

Days later, after the governor told AP he was relying on religious faith to help salvage his marriage even though the love of his life was in Argentina, Jenny Sanford said it was up to the people of South Carolina whether they wanted to give their governor a second chance.

"His far more egregious offenses were committed against God, the institutions of marriage and family, our boys and me," she said.

Born Jennifer Sullivan, the first lady grew up near Chicago. Her grandfather founded the Skil Corp., a power tool manufacturer. She graduated from Georgetown University in 1984 with a degree in finance, then worked for the Wall Street investment banking firm Lazard Freres & Co., where she was a vice president in mergers and acquisitions.

The Sanfords met in New York in the 1980s when Mark Sanford also was working in finance, at Goldman Sachs.

The couple married in 1989 and relocated to South Carolina, where Sanford worked in real estate before serving three terms in Congress. Jenny Sanford managed several of her husband's campaigns. Until revelations of the affair, he had been considered a possible 2012 Republican presidential candidate.

The couple separated two weeks before news of the affair became public. Jenny Sanford and her sons sought refuge at the couple's beachfront home on Sullivans Island while Sanford remained in the state capital of Columbia, occasionally visiting his family.

Unlike some political wives, Jenny Sanford did not stand next to her husband when he revealed the affair with Chapur, whom he met on a trip to Uruguay in 2001.

Even afterward, the governor seemed undecided about which road to take.

"I don't want to blow up the kids' lives. I don't want to blow up 20 years that we've invested," he told AP. "But if I'm completely honest, there are still feelings in the way. If we keep pushing it this way, we get those to die off, but they're still there and they're still real."

Jenny Sanford said the couple had been to counseling since she found out about the affair.

"We both indicated a willingness to continue working on the marriage, but there's not room for three people in a marriage," she told the AP. "I've done everything in my power possibly to keep him from going to see her and to really make sure she was off the table, including asking him to leave."

Nicklaus: Woods' issues his own

Associated Press

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Jack Nicklaus said the fallout over Tiger Woods' car crash and allegations of extramarital affairs is "none of my business."

Time usually heals all wounds. I think the hardest thing is obviously his family. That's a private matter for him and his family. ... He'll figure it out.

” -- Jack Nicklaus

"Our public is pretty forgiving at times," Nicklaus said Thursday. "Time usually heals all wounds. I think the hardest thing is obviously his family. That's a private matter for him and his family."

Nicklaus won 18 major championships, the most in golf history. Woods is second with 14.

Woods has remained out of the public eye since the crash Thanksgiving weekend and the scandal that quickly followed. He has acknowledged "transgressions" on his Web site.

"He's a great athlete," Nicklaus said. "He'll figure it out."

Nicklaus' first public comments about Woods' situation came after an event honoring The Benjamin School's golf team, recent winners of a Florida state championship. Son Gary Nicklaus played on a state title team at the school 26 years ago.

Henin: I'm back, and I'm here for Wimbledon

Henin: I'm back, and I'm here for Wimbledon

Justine Henin got her preparations for a competitive return in 2010 off to the perfect start this weekend, with victory at the Women Tennis Trophy in Charleroi.

The 27-year-old former world No.1 beat compatriot and world No.81 Kirsten Flipkens on Satruday before returning on Sunday to post a 6-4 6-4 victory over Flavia Pennetta and claim the Belgian exhibition title.

And Henin admitted the win over the world No.12 was a timely boost to her confidence ahead of her return to the WTA in January, as she bids to emulate Kim Clijsters with a Grand Slam victory.

“I don’t know if it’s possible, but that just makes it an even more passionate challenge for me”

Clijsters came out of retirement earlier this year and marked her comeback by landing the US Open in September. But while Henin does not expect to make such an instant impact at the Australian Open, the Belgian has targeted Wimbledon as her main objective next season.

“It is another Justine Henin who will try and go out there and achieve her dream of finally winning Wimbledon,” said Henin, who will complete her career slam with victory in SW19.

“I don’t know if it’s possible but that just makes it an even more passionate challenge for me.”

Henin shocked the tennis world with her immediate retirement from tennis in May 2008, leaving the game while topping the rankings.

But 15 months on, the seven-time Grand Slam champion announced she will make her official return to the WTA Tour in Brisbane on January 3, two weeks before the Australian Open kicks off.

“To be honest, I don’t have any big expectations as regards results in Australia,” Henin stressed. “But I will be delighted just to return to the country again, I love it there, and to the official circuit.

“I’ve never regretted my decision to stop playing but now I’m really excited about the prospect of starting a second career that probably won’t look anything like the first, at least in my mind.”

Henin will compete in another exhibition tournament in Cairo on December 12 before heading to Melbourne, when she will face world No.20 Nadia Petrova.

CBS cancels 'As The World Turns'

CBS cancels another daytime drama

CBS

NEW YORK — CBS canceled "As the World Turns" on Tuesday, putting the company that coined the phrase "soap operas" out of the business of making daytime dramas for the first time in 76 years.

"As the World Turns" has been on the air since 1956 and televised its 13,661st episode Tuesday. Its last episode will be next September, the network said.

It's the second daytime drama CBS has canceled in a year, after "Guiding Light." Both shows were produced by a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, the company for which the term "soap operas" was created because it used the shows to hawk products like Ivory soap and Duz laundry detergent.

Daytime dramas have been fading as a genre for years with more women joining the work force and the increased number of channels offering alternatives like news, talk, reality and game shows. In tough economic times, paying casts, producers and writers proved prohibitive to networks when there were cheaper alternatives.

The cancellation will leave CBS with only two daytime dramas: "The Young and the Restless" and "The Bold and Beautiful."

Through the years, actors Marisa Tomei, Meg Ryan, Parker Posey and James Earl Jones have appeared on "As the World Turns." The show follows families in the Illinois town of Oakdale.

"It's a hell of a Christmas present," said actress Eileen Fulton, who will mark 50 years playing the character Lisa Grimaldi on the show. Her character has been through nine marriages and Fulton was hoping for a 10th before the signoff.

"I'm just very sad," she said. "I'm sad for all of the people who work out there in Brooklyn (where the show is filmed). We're a family. I hate to be split up. It's like a divorce."

Brian Cahill, senior vice president and managing director of the P&G subsidiary TeleNext Media Inc., said the company is actively seeking a new outlet to carry the show.

TeleNext said the same thing about "Guiding Light," which went off the air in September, but has been unable to find a new home. Keeping the show alive online has been discussed, but that's an alternative where cost may prove prohibitive.

Procter & Gamble first began producing soap operas in 1933 with the radio show "Ma Perkins," and has made a total of 20 such programs in its history.

U.S. gets a plum Cup draw for once

U.S. gets a plum Cup draw for once

Story Highlights
  • U.S. drawn into Group C at 2010 World Cup with England, Algeria, Slovenia
  • Americans open on June 12 vs. England; Donovan vs. Beckham angles abound
  • If U.S. advances, it wouldn't face any of the strongest teams until semifinals

U.S.' 2010 World Cup Group Schedule June 12 vs. England in Rustenburg June 18 vs. Slovenia in Johannesburg June 22 vs. Algeria in Pretoria

The gods of soccer smiled upon the United States for once on Friday, giving the Americans one of the most fortunate draws imaginable for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (FULL DRAW).

Once all the ping-pong balls were drawn in Cape Town, the U.S. ended up with the following first-round games: vs. England on June 12 in Rustenburg, vs. Slovenia on June 18 in Johannesburg and vs. Algeria on June 23 in Pretoria.

The vast majority of pundits around the world will pick the U.S. to advance to the knockout round along with England, and with good reason. Slovenia and Algeria were two of the biggest surprises in November even to qualify for the World Cup, both countries needing upsets in playoffs against Russia (by Slovenia) and Egypt (by Algeria) to reach the field of 32. Algeria and Slovenia are arguably the worst teams from Africa and Europe, respectively, to qualify for South Africa.

And while England will be a huge challenge in the U.S.' opening game, it's a mouthwatering matchup between old rivals who last met in the World Cup in 1950: a 1-0 U.S. victory that is considered perhaps the greatest upset in World Cup history. Can anyone say Landon Donovan vs. David Beckham in South Africa? If you're the U.S., having your toughest group game first is a good thing. (Remember the big win over Portugal in the 2002 World Cup opener?) What's more, England is a traditionally slow-starting team in World Cups.

But there's even more to the U.S.' lucky draw. If the Yanks advance to the knockout rounds, the World Cup bracket structure would allow them to avoid having to meet any of the FIFA rankings' top four teams (Spain, Brazil, Netherlands, Italy) until the semifinals. That's right: The world's top four teams are all on the other side of the bracket.

What does all this mean? Well, the U.S. will have no excuses if it fails to reach the knockout rounds of the 2010 World Cup. It won't matter if the Americans are still missing players due to injury (Oguchi Onyewu, Charlie Davies, JayDeMerit). It won't matter because this is just about the kindest draw you could imagine.

Think about it: The U.S. won't even have to hop on a plane from its base near Pretoria to travel to games in Rustenburg (a two-hour drive), Johannesburg (a one-hour drive) and Pretoria (a no-hour drive).

Nor will the Yanks be uncomfortable in their surroundings, having played games during last June's Confederations Cup at the same stadiums in Rustenburg (a 3-0 win vs. Egypt), in Pretoria (a 3-0 loss to Brazil) and in Johannesburg's Ellis Park (a 3-2 loss to Brazil). All three games will be at altitude, but the U.S. will have plenty of time to acclimatize at its training camp beforehand.

So, yes, the soccer gods smiled on America on Friday. Get ready for the hype on USA-England. And get ready for expectations around the U.S. to spike mightily.
