Late field goal gives Titans 20-17 win over Texas
HOUSTON – Rob Bironas kicked a 53-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining and the Tennessee Titans beat the Houston Texans 20-17 Monday night for their fourth straight victory after an 0-6 start.
The Texans (5-5) had a chance to tie it, but Kris Brown's 49-yard attempt with 1 second remaining was wide left. It was his second miss of the game and the second straight game he's missed a chance to send the Texans to overtime.
The Titans (4-6) haven't lost since Vince Young took over at quarterback. He is 2-0 as a starter in his hometown of Houston after running for the winning touchdown in overtime in his last start here, as a rookie in 2006.
The Titans started the go-ahead drive at the 6-yard line, but the Texans were called for a 15-yard horse collar penalty on a tackle on Chris Johnson. A 22-yard run by Johnson two plays later put the Titans on their 41 just before the two-minute warning.
Young had a 12 yard run for a first down later in the drive but the Titans couldn't keep it going and went to Bironas for the field goal, his second of at least 50 yards Monday.
The Texans moved the ball 31 yards in five plays before Brown came in for the field-goal attempt. He missed from the same distance in the third quarter and missed one from 42 yards as time expired in a 20-17 loss to Indianapolis before Houston's bye.
Bironas had missed earlier, too, on a 49-yarder with about 10 minutes left.
Johnson finished with 151 yards rushing and Young had a touchdown pass in the first half. Bironas added a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter.
The Titans ran for a first down on a fake punt with about 5 1/2 minutes left, but were called for delay of game and had to punt it away. The punt came after two consecutive incomplete passes by Young.
The Texans couldn't get anything going on the next drive and had to give it back when a wide open Steve Slaton dropped a pass that would have been enough for the first down.
Antonio Smith got a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness after taking an extra shot at a Titan after a play giving Tennessee a first down at the Houston 45. Tennessee came away empty after Young's pass on third down fell incomplete and then Bironas missed a field-goal try.
The Titans had Schaub under heavy pressure all night and he was sacked four times. He was 25 of 39 for 305 yards and threw two first-half touchdowns.
Andre Johnson got in front of Michael Griffin for a 49-yard reception on third-and-1 to get Houston down inside the 10-yard line in the third quarter. But the Texans drive stalled after that and they settled for a 26-yard field goal by Brown to tie it at 17.
Tennessee took its first lead of the game on a 50-yard field goal by Bironas with about three minutes left in the third quarter. The Titans kicked the field goal after Bernard Pollard tackled Young for a 2-yard loss on third-and-5.
A Titans drive early in the third quarter ended when Young scrambled up the middle for 10 yards before Zac Diles forced a fumble that Pollard recovered at the Texans' 16-yard line.
The Texans couldn't convert when Brown's 49-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.
A 1-yard run by LenDale White tied it at 14 about a minute before halftime. The Titans were helped downfield by a dazzling run by Chris Johnson. He evaded one would-be tackler before bouncing off another one and spinning around to get around two more Texans for a 36-yard gain.
Houston regained the lead with a 12-yard touchdown reception by Andre Johnson in the second quarter that made it 14-7. That drive was extended when Schaub found rookie James Casey on a 32-yard reception on third-and-3 four plays earlier.
Houston took an early lead when Slaton caught a short pass from Schaub and crashed into the end zone for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Tennessee tied it 7-all when Young found Kenny Britt for a 13-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.
Mya is 3 points from perfect at 'Dancing' finale
LOS ANGELES – Mya is poised to take the "Dancing With the Stars" title after finishing three points away from perfect during the final night of competition Monday.
She made it clear that she intends to claim the show's mirrorball trophy.
"I haven't worked this hard for this long not to win this thing," she said Monday. "That trophy is mine."
The singer scored 87 out of 90 points for her three dances with professional partner Dmitry Chaplin. The pair was perfect on their paso doble and bested their fellow finalists with a perfect score during the megamix challenge, which saw them dancing side-by-side with Donny Osmond and Kelly Osbourne. Mya's "Hairspray"-themed freestyle dance didn't dazzle the judges, who gave it 27 out of 30 points.
"I was expecting something a little bit more spectacular," judge Bruno Tonioli said.
Osmond finished in second place with 85 out of 90 points. He and professional partner Kym Johnson earned a perfect score of 30 for their Broadway-inspired freestyle routine, which head judge Len Goodman called "an absolute show-stopper." The couple collected 27 points for their cha-cha and 28 during the megamix challenge.
Despite the second-place finish, Osmond said he still wants to become the "Dancing" champ.
"I want to win this mirrorball so badly," he said Monday. "Because if you had a sister named Marie and she was going to rub it in your face your whole life, you'd want to win, too."
A slim and smiling Kelly Osbourne finished third with 76 points out of 90. She and professional partner Louis Van Amstel collected 26 points each for their Argentine tango and megamix performance. The couple's glittery freestyle dance to the '70s classic "I Will Survive" earned 24 points — along with glowing praise from the judges.
"One thing is for sure," Tonioli said. "You never looked more beautiful than tonight."
Osbourne said she exceeded her own expectations on the ABC show.
"I didn't think that I really could do it, but this was my opportunity to show people that I have grown up," the reality star said Monday. "Every single dance we've done so far in this competition has been such a learning process and an adventure for me. I never thought we were going to get this far, but I'm so glad we did."
Each will perform again on Tuesday's episode, when a new "Dancing" champ will be crowned.
"However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results."

Rafael Nadal again loses to Robin Soderling

LONDON – Rafael Nadal lost to Robin Soderling for the second straight time, falling 6-4, 6-4 Monday in their opening round-robin match at the ATP World Tour Finals.
Soderling, who handed the Spaniard his first loss on clay at the French Open this year, powered his way through the Group B match by keeping Nadal on the move on the hard court at O2 Arena.
"I didn't play really bad," Nadal said. "But in the important moments, I didn't have this calm, this necessary calm, to win these matches against the best players of the world."
Novak Djokovic plays Nikolay Davydenko later in the day in the other Group B match.
The second-ranked Nadal can still reach the semifinals of the season-ending tournament for the top eight players. He can also capture the year-end No. 1 ranking from Roger Federer, but Monday's loss hasn't helped his chances.
"My level right now I think is not to be No. 1," Nadal said. "My level is to be still fighting and practicing hard to be ready as soon as possible to compete another time with equal conditions with everybody."
On Tuesday, four-time champion Federer will face Andy Murray in Group A. Both players won their opening matches Sunday. In the other match, U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will play Fernando Verdasco. The top two players in each group after the round-robin stage will advance to the semifinals.
Soderling won both sets by breaking serve in the final game. Before the end of the first set, however, Nadal had thought he won the game and evened the score at 5-5.
Serving at 40-30, Nadal allowed himself a moment of celebration when his first serve whizzed by Soderling. But before the Spaniard was able to let his emotions loose, his serve was called long.
Off the second serve, Nadal sent a forehand long, setting up deuce. Two more mistakes off the forehand gave his Swedish opponent the game and the set.
"I tried to keep on fighting, keep telling myself that I will get one more chance this set, and I took it straight away," Soderling said.
Like in the first set, Nadal and Soderling traded breaks early in the second. In the final game, Nadal saved one match point when Soderling put a forehand long, but the Spaniard shanked a backhand on the second.
Nadal finished the match with 24 unforced errors and only 18 winners, while Soderling had 27 and 23. Both had five aces.
"Sometimes you have some best moments; sometimes you have little bit worse moments. This probably is one of these moments for me right now," Nadal said. "Just accept and work to improve the situation."
Nadal had won four straight French Open titles heading into the 2009 season, but Soderling beat the then-top-ranked player in the fourth round at Roland Garros. Soderling went on to reach his first Grand Slam final, but lost to Federer.
Nadal then was unable to defend his Wimbledon title because of knee injuries. He later took a second break after the U.S. Open to treat a stomach muscle.
"The second half of the year was difficult for me," Nadal said. "But I am working really hard to come back at my best level. I think I'm not far away."
The ninth-ranked Soderling was invited to the tournament only after Andy Roddick withdrew because of injury.
"I never really thought of vacation because I know I was first alternate," Soderling said. "I tried to prepare as if I was going to play. ... I wouldn't call it a free chance. I worked pretty hard throughout the year to get this chance."

Federer to face del Potro and Murray
LONDON -- Top-ranked Roger Federer will play U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray in the round-robin phase of the ATP World Tour Finals.
After Wednesday's draw, Federer also faces Fernando Verdasco in Group A. The Swiss star lost to Del Potro in the U.S. Open final.
"Obviously, I look forward to playing Roger," Murray said. "I've played Juan a few times on the tour recently and also had a close match recently with Verdasco indoors in Valencia."
Second-ranked Rafael Nadal was drawn into Group B with Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko and Robin Soderling.
The top two players in each group will advance to the semifinals of the season-ending tournament, which starts Sunday at the O2 Arena in London. The final is set for Nov. 29.
The tournament, which could earn an undefeated champion $1.63 million, features the top eight players in the world. Each round-robin match is worth $120,000, while the semifinal winners earn another $380,000 each. The champion will get an extra $770,000.
Federer, who regained the No. 1 ranking from Nadal this season, could still be overtaken by the second-ranked Spaniard because an undefeated winner of the tournament will claim 1,500 points in the rankings. Federer has 10,150 points while Nadal trails with 9,205.
Federer rebounded from a disappointing year in 2008 and completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open for the first time. He then reclaimed his Wimbledon title while breaking Pete Sampras' career Grand Slam record with his 15th major title.
In the other two Grand Slam tournaments, Federer lost in five sets in the finals -- to Nadal at the Australian Open and to Del Potro at the U.S. Open.
Despite winning the Australian Open, Nadal struggled with injuries throughout the 2009 season. He lost to Soderling in the fourth round at Roland Garros and then pulled out of Wimbledon, where he was the defending champion. He made the semifinals at the U.S. Open, but again was hampered by injuries and lost to Del Potro.
Djokovic, who won the ATP World Tour Finals in Shanghai last year, seems to be in the best form heading into this year's tournament. The third-ranked Serb beat Federer in the Swiss Indoors final early this month, and then defeated Nadal in the Paris Masters semifinals en route to winning the tournament last Sunday.
Sixth-ranked Andy Roddick had been expected to play in London, but the Wimbledon finalist withdrew late Tuesday with a left knee injury. Ninth-ranked Soderling, who lost to Federer in the French Open final, is Roddick's replacement.
In doubles, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles, Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak, and Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram are in Group A. Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes, Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach, and Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski are in Group B.

Mina Brees died of drug overdose
Associated Press
GRANBY, Colo. -- The death of the mother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been ruled a suicide.

Brees
Mina Brees, an attorney from Austin, Texas, died Aug. 7 while visiting Colorado. Grand County coroner Brenda Bock concluded this week that the 59-year-old Brees died of a prescription drug overdose and ruled the death a suicide.
Bock said Brees died while staying at the home of a friend in Granby near Rocky Mountain National Park.
It took longer than three months for autopsy results to be released, but Bock said that's typical for cases involving toxicology tests.
The Austin American Statesman reported that three days before Brees died, the Texas attorney general's office subpoenaed her business records.
She had allegedly sent letters to some restaurants in Austin and Houston stating that they had lost their rights to use their names to a company she represented, Chicksports, but they could win the rights back by paying up to $25,000. She was also the president of Chicksports but that wasn't mentioned in the letter.
Relations between Drew Brees and his mother were strained at times and the quarterback asked her to stop using his picture in TV commercials touting her candidacy for a Texas appeals court seat in 2006.
Mina Brees said she had not anticipated upsetting her son and sent out replacement commercials omitting mention of him.
At the time, Drew Brees called his relationship with his mother "nonexistent," saying it crumbled six years earlier when he refused to hire her as his agent.
Austin attorney Marty Akins, the brother of Mina Brees, declined comment late Friday.
