There was a company that built serial comms equipment back in the day called Black Box.   Nobody cared how those interfaces worked back then, but they got the jobs done, for eg. parallel to serial, terminal to serial, extenders, on and on. Black box came to mean: What goes in don't matter as long as we get the right results.............
