Container garden [this & That]

Published:

Went out and picked the ripe tomatoes today.

I dug into the area in the two deck containers where I planted the yellow and zucchini squash seed and found the seeds never germinated. Planted the seed on June 22nd, 12 days ago. Only one yellow squash seed came up. While at the market today I purchased a packet of fordhook zucchini squash seeds and planted about five seeds. They did not have any yellow squash seeds in the seed rack. The one seed that did come up is a yellow squash. So I will end up with three or four zucchini plants and one yellow squash plant. Not going to buy anymore yellow squash seed this year.

While at Home Depot yesterday I purchased a grinding cylinder with the grinding stone measuring 3/4 diameter by 1 1/2 inch long attached to a 1/4 inch shank 1/1/2 inches long. I got that to attach to my electric drill to grind off the sharp points on the metal chimneys [cages] I made. When I cut the chimney wire with the heavy duty wire cutter left a sharp edge where it was cut. Raked myself a few times on the sharp points. When I made the chimneys I also cut the metal wire to create a larger opening than 6 x 6 to reach in with my soil meters and easier to spread ferlizerBig Grin around. Those sharp points are nasty when I pass my arm over them by mistake. They draw blood too.P***ed I will be going out tomorrow or Friday and do some grinding.

I planted five little individual Fordhook zucchini plants at three different times this year and not a one came up. And this was in a greenhouse where I work! I am through this year better luck next year. In fact, we have had such mild weather this season that very few veggies have come up strong. Here at my house we had the biggest crop of cherries I have ever seen, so much so I am giving them away and froze a ton to can to make jam. At work, none of the cherry trees gave any fruit. It is just a very strange year. Hope you get those cages you made taken care of, those can be some bad cuts and they hurt too!

Yep, crop failures can be a discouraging experience.
I remember we had a cherry tree on the farm. When I lived with my parents growing up fresh cherry pie was something I looked forward to when the cherries ripened. Cherry pie is top on my list of favorites along with rhubarb pie. We use to have about a 1/4 acre patch of rhubarb and maybe 1 acre of asparagus.
