This & That

Something different.

I have been debating for along time on what to do with the cabinet top I made about 11 years ago and painted. The laundry cabinet I made is 5 feet long and 23 inches deep with no doors on the front and one shelf 12 inches deep to the  back of the cabinet running 3/4 of the length of the cabinet. I used 3/4 inch finish plywood for the top with a molding installed on the edge to cover the laminate layers exposed. I then painted the top.

So I was considering all sorts of different options and finally decided to stain the top. How was I going to do that with paint on it! I removed the plywood top from the cabinet and removed the trim edging. Purchased new unfinished edging moulding, light colored stain and a small pack of 4d nails. Flipped the top over exposing the unfinished side of the cabinet top. Sanded the unfinished side all down and reinstalled the top fastening it down. Cut and installed the new moulding [1/2 x 3/4 oak shoe  moulding] putting the rounded edge up. The old top had no back splash board. It just butted the drywall. I cut a 1 x 5 new board the length of the top installing shoe moulding on top of that. Pre stained the back splash and installed that. Then I stained the top and the new edging finishing that today. I will let the stain dry good and then will coat with polyurethane. Let that dry real good and then put a coating of table top or furniture wax on it. They sell a special wax I seen for that. Forgot the name of it. Should look real nice when finished.

So with only about $12.00 spent and a few hours of work I end up with a new counter top for the laundry cabinet.

I am already happy with the looks of it with just the stain on it. Just looked at my purchase receipt and I purchased one quart Minwax wood finish golden pecan. I only used just a smidgen of the stain.

I was thinking about building a free standing cabinet for the kitchen for extra storage and I may as well finish the cabinet with the stain and poly coat it and the waxing it. The cabinet will be about six feet tall, about 20 inches wide and 16 inches deep with no door. I have been thinking about building that for quite awhile.
