Container garden

Published:

This past week I transplanted the squash plants into individual containers having double chimneys for support. I originally seeded four containers with three seeds in each container, Some came up in each container and some did not. When I transplanted the squash I dug down deep enough to bury up to the first leaf on the plant. I was out yesterday and added more potting mix to the squash containers as the plants grew some. Will add the potting mix up to the first leaf until they have reached their height. The squash plants look healthy so far. Will end up with three containers of yellow butter and three containers of Fordhook zucchini.

Only one Siberian tomato plant survived I started from seed and that is up about four inches. I banked the potting mix on the tomato plant to the first leaf also. Will be hit and miss if the tomato plant survives or produces any tomatoes before it gets to cold.

I will probably start a bed of radishes in two or three weeks in my elevated container which is about three foot square. Temperatures are starting to cool down for the fall planting.

I was at Home Depot Friday and I purchased one six inch container of orange Chrysanthemum and one 4.5 inch container of red Zinnia. Yesterday I transplanted them into my 2.5 gallon flower pails.

The Marigolds that were hanging on the shepherds pole in the front yard got pretty raggedy and were dying out. So I took the Torneia plant I had in the back yard and hung it on the shepherds pole. The Torneia plant is nice and bushy and flowers well. I will just trash the Marigold plant when I need the 2.5 gallon container for my Swiss Chard when I plant those in a week or so.

May think of some other easy to grow vegetables for fall planting.
