Catching Drosophila melanogaster
Published:
Fruit flies.
We put apple cider vinegar in a small container and set the container(s) where we want to catch the flies.
Quick, easy and effective.
Comments
I have had success with a 16 oz. or liter empty soda bottle, cutting off the top - like a funnel - and after putting in a piece of banana (or just the peel), stapling the upside down "funnel" to the larger part. They fly in but most don't fly out. I don't drink much pop, so I ran out of those quickly.
After you posted this this morning, I went and read about them (after having one fly up my nose), they're also called "vinegar flies" - I did not know that!
The fruit flies get in the vinegar and drown.
