The Empty Tomb
Published:
Updated:
Another post from my blog, circa 2008 or so.
The empty tomb at The Cross of Our Lord, Groom, Texas.
My friends and regular readers of this blog know how much I enjoy going over to the huge cross at Groom and taking photos. These are a year or so old, but I don't think I've yet published the following photo in this blog.
If you've seen my other posts about the cross, you'll also know how I love the angel atop the empty tomb.
A closer, straight-on look at the stone that was rolled away.
Inside the tomb is this angel:

I woke up to thunder early one morning, got online to look at the radar and saw the line of storms were extending to just past Groom, the small town where the cross is located. I decided I'd drive over there and see if I could get some photos of the cross or the three crosses w/ the storm in the background. The route I take to get there are some twisty Farm-to-Market roads, no traffic, esp. at that time of the morning, so I made good time.
The sun was trying to peek through the storm clouds when I got there and I got a few shots of various things, one of the angel pics in the other recent post I made. It started raining a little more heavily, so instead of going back to my truck to stay dry, I slipped into the tomb.
It's eerily quiet inside and not all that well-lit. The opening is quite low and I stood there looking out at the rain coming down when I heard a rustle behind me. Startled, I turned around, letting my eyes adjust to the poor light but didn't see anything. There's an "alcove" or bench off to one side and I looked but couldn't make out anything...then I saw a mass of "something" lying there and stepped closer to see it was a person lying there sleeping. They turned over, making again the sound I had just heard and I panicked and started backing away. I could just see the headlines "Man Killed by Hitchhiker at Groom Cross". I spun on my heel and hurried out the opening...
...and forgetting how low it was. I whacked my forehead HARD against the concrete faux stone overhang and very nearly knocked myself out. I staggered back to my truck, all the while looking over my shoulder back at the tomb, hoping to not see the man come after me with a huge knife. (I was dazed but my imagination was still in overdrive)
I got in my pickup and headed back home...with only a few photos, a still-racing heart, a headache and a pretty good-sized knot on my forehead, bleeding more than expected from a small cut in the middle of it.
I haven't been back since, but plan on returning again sometime soon. I'll probably not go back into the tomb again, though. Been there, done that.
