The wire cages for the squash seem to be doing what is expected of them. A ten or twelve inch diameter with a height of two to three feet works well.
I trained the squash leaves to grow up in the chimney and then allowed the leaf to extend out through the cage opening at the sides at different elevations. 

I was out on the deck watching the plants when there was a good wind blowing. With the leaves supported by the cage prevents the leaves from thrashing about and twisting the plant stem around. I need to watch how much leaf stem sticks out beyond the cage as too much stem sticking out the wind will catch the leaf and snap the leaf stem real quick as the leaf stems are hollow.

With the squash plant growing in the cage and supported by the leaves also helps to prevent the plant stem from twisting and splitting. With the leaves supported could also aid in supporting the plant when it gets heavy with the squash growing.
